So, it's been 4 years since I built a new PC outright. My friend gave me some help on catching up, but I take his advice with a grain of salt. I wanted to bounce some ideas off other people before I make any major investments.

Yes, I've heard about how the Phenom is a poor performer compared to the latest generation of Intel CPUs. However, I don't have a problem with overclocking, especially now that AMD's released overdrive for their 7 series chipsets.
My friend is of the opinion that I should do as he did, use a 9600 "Black" with a 7 series mobo (MSI I believe), and an ATI Radeon 3870. The idea here is that AMD's "Spider" platform and Overdrive should make up for the low performance of the Phenom and Radeon.
I personally would rather spend a little extra $$$ and get a nVidia 8 series GPU. As for the CPU, I'm not real sure what to do, still researching overclock information.
So, BF2S, whats your opinion? Is the lower priced "Spider" platform worth the money/overclocking effort? Or should I go the traditional route with nVidia 8 series and Core 2 CPU?
