War References in Sports

Does it bother anyone when athletes refer to their game as war? Or the field of battle?

It does not bother me personally, although we do refer to Kellen Winslow (in the vid) as Sgt. Winslow. Some of my friends, who have never even been in a war, seem to have a problem with it. I am not sure why.

There was a clip of an old-school football player...Art D something. He remarked that he just laughed when players referred to the game as "war". He said, "War is where you're scared to death and shit yourself your so scared. Killing and being killed. I've been to war...this ain't it." Keep in mind, this guy played in the late 40s/early 50s...so he'd seen action in WW2.

Example:

hahahahahah i love that clip. it sure doesn't bother me when they say those kinds of things. the field of play is similar to a war zone at times, and they are technically putting their lives on the line whenever they play.

I guess I could see how someone would be offended by it, but I myself am not. It's obvious that it's being used in the colloquial form... even if he seems to seriously call himself "Sgt. Winslow"

maybe when coaches or players refer to a game as a "battle" or a "war" they are trying to bring a greater significance to the event so that the players will try harder?

I was on a curling team in high school (not a joke). Our coach sometimes used war terminology. I found that weird, but then again I wasn't Canadian...just good at curling.

not really, that guy just came off as an idiot. some fights are called wars when each guy consistently damages their opponent without one getting the better of the other, sort of makes sense i think. id never use such terminology though, war is something else...
