Hey guys ...

Just wondered if anyone's ever bought from Dell before?

I ask because I am seriously considering, in a few months, purchasing a laptop for 6th form from there ... with slight gaming capabilities ... and wondered if anyone has any experience with them?

Just in case anyone wonders if they know anywhere that can beat their prices ... the specs below, from Dell, total £530

I have a Dell E510 Desktop system.

I went with Dell because I have access to a Dell Prefferred Account and needed to make payments.

When I first got it had some minor issues but within a week the HDD was dead.

A little bit of a PITA dealing with support but in the end they had someone out to swap it in a couple days.

Right now I'm having trouble with the optical drive - I'm thinking it'll just be easier to replace it than deal with them.

Next year I'll be ready for a new system.  I'd consider buying a Dell only if I needed to make payments.

I'm on a dell laptop right now. It's my primary computer.
Any way you can get a slightly faster processor on that?
Otherwise, it looks totally good.

If you're feeling lucky this is a good way to save money if you want to buy from Dell.

I think by now, it's mostly a preference thing, XP or Vista.

But as far as Dells go, they're not too bad. I've got an E1505 laptop, and it's held up for me fine. I've had it for about 1 1/2 years now.

idk because currently I'm using a 3.0Ghz P4 and in all honesty it runs .... ok ..... so would a C2D 1.4Ghz be enough for simple apps ie. some picture editing, word processing and some gaming or ... ?

bearing in mind it has 2GB RAM and an 8600M GT.

The 1.8 C2D in my laptop handled C&C Generals no sweat.

I've run UT2k4, Morrowind, SWAT 4, HL, HL2 and more on my laptop.

And that was with an Intel Integrated gpu!

I have had five dell computers but only one of them is a laptop (the most recent actually).  My only advice is to make sure you go over absolutely every single part they put into your system and make sure that it is what you want.  Also if you have the time you should haggle with them as much as possible, my laptop was quoted as £899 and I got it for £699.   When they quote your price tell them it's to much and you'll think about it.  Within two days they will phone you with a cheaper price.

My Laptop specs were: Inspiron 1520 2.2 C2D, 2GB ram, 140GB HD, 256MB 8600GT, next gen wifi card, great lappy, too bad I didn't know better then to get XP cause vista is horrible.  It is also my first dual core and to be honest I am really unimpressed with the performance, but it's a lappy with a web cam, and you'll be happy if you fork out for the better processor.

Anyway I can play any game on it I can play on my desktop, obviously with reduction in graphics quality, with the exception of CoH, BF2, COD4, 2142, WIC, TDU, and many many more, but it's heavy as a pocket full of £1 coins, and the battery is sooooooooooooooooooo shit.

Hope that helps...

We (where I work) have spent about $20 Million on Dell products... And that is just in the last 5 years. Except for the odd specialty item, everything we have is from Dell. We have obviously had very good luck and very good service from Dell or we would go elsewhere. Then again, once you break the 1 million dollar mark you start getting special treatment, so I don't know how much difference it may be on a single laptop purchase.

How do the mobile intel cpu's work?

Take the laptop i'm considering and Morpheus' chip.

morph : 1.8 gHz Dual core (T2400)
what i'm considering : 1.4 gHz Dual core (T5270)

Is there something I'm not aware of?
I just assumed the higher the model number the faster the clock ... but obviously it isn't?

Because f*ck you that's why.

I have a Dell XPS that I have had since 2003 and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.  I've done a few mods to it but all in all, it still works just as well as it did when I first got it.

Newer can mean more efficient. It can also be faster with a slower clock speed. Compare a 3 Ghz Pentium 4 against a 2.4 Ghz Quad Core Extreme... Ghz just isn't the only thing to look at any more. You might drain a battery 10 times faster for that older model that is .4 Ghz faster, for example...
