and in saudi arabia, women are still getting hassled for driving cars.  oh, and a couple 'eloped' in Pakistan and got stoned.  a nice world we live in.  fortunately my monitor is not made in either of those shithole countries.

On a global scale, America is actually a "liberal" country.  The most conservative countries are usually in the Third World.

Liberalism, when defined in terms of liberal democracy, is a very good thing.

So a country can't be "liberal" and authoritarian?  Look at the past 100 years of history in Latin America.  Plenty of leftist regimes had death squads and such.  Look at Cuba over the last 50 years.

Classical Liberalism is defined as laissez faire government, which would make Communism and dictatorships classically conservative.  I think he may have inadvertently meant that context even if he didn't explain himself very well.

Makes me think of the Sedition Acts. "Don't badmouth the government or you can get thrown in jail!" Even stranger was that such an act seems to directly contradict the First Amendment. Guess China's lucky they don't have such an amendment.
