I've bought a Dimension 8250 and a XPS3 from Dell. Both still work fine. Much cheaper to build your own.
We have 4 Dells in our house, quite frankly, the only computer that isn't a dell is mine...
We have 2 Desktops and 2 Laptops, nothing has ever gone wrong with them. Well, one of them had a bad stick of ram, but they sent us a new one right away...

Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop, purchased 2002 and still going.
Dell laptops are not bad (better than their desktops). I wouldnt really think of going anywhere else to but a laptop... expect that they seemed to have stopped shipping 8600M GTs with their 1520s?

Not sure karma ... the one i'm considering is a vosotro 1500
Didn't say you could. I told you what I bought from Dell and then said it would of been cheaper to build. I never said anything about a laptop.mitch212k_2 wrote:

I think we got 2 or 3 Dells in our house.
Mine is a Dimension 9150, and it's great.

3 Desktops, 1 Laptop from Dell.
1 Desktop Hard Drive went a year ago, but hey, these things happen.
The Laptop took 1 month to arrive- but I customized the shit out of it, and it was in August as well (everyone ordering laptops for school/work?)
No matter what you buy: desktop or PC, they come laden with complete and utter rubbish, so be prepared to reformat the day you get it- but It comes with a disk, and all drivers and diagnostics specific for your machine, are easiliy availible on their support site.
But Dell are Cheap, and the machines are reliable, look ok, and run fine.

So when's the best time to order it Titch if I need it for September ideally ... ? Are there more offers/discounts around the school holidays time enouraging more to buy from them?Titch2349 wrote:

tbh I don't know- but if you looking at getting it for September, make sure you order well in advance (1month +)mitch212k_2 wrote:

Seeing the problems with Dell @ work, I will never touch one again....
We only use Dell server in the systems we sell these days because of there reliability and constructiondelta4bravo*nl* wrote:

We have had dozens of Dell workstations over the last few years and only 1 hard drive problem
I have had 3 Dells at home (current XPS 600, did crash when new, Dell replaced MB and no probs since)
@OP: However, never compare any brands laptops with desktops or servers.... far to different. So no experience of Dell laptops as they used to have such a bad rep we avoided them as a company.
Can be expensive (but not so much if you compare with a home build with a legal OS ) - however depends so much on how many units they want to sell etc. and the prices go up and down a lot. From what I've heard they have a defined range they can discounts depending on many factors.... and the ordinary punter has to wait for a good offer when they most need the sales. Luckily once you buy enough as a company you always get a very good discount
Had a Dell P4 before upgrading to my dual core amd system. No problems, worked flawlessly.
Dell is a tad more expensive than making your own but because your getting a laptop I guess you have no choice.
And I'm getting a laptop from dell when my current dell tower's lease runs out.
