I've been wondering this recently, I know that if it goes too far into your ear it can make hearing harder (happened to me before) but as far as normal wax build-up goes, can it affect hearing?

Yes it can.  My teacher complained that I couldn't always hear in class, I had to get my ears syringed when I was about 5 due to this.  Not a pleasant experience.
Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.

Just get one of those ear syringes and put some peroxide in it and squirt it in your ear.  Or just use a squirt gun or something, that'll get rid of nearly any wax without pushing it further in.

Yeah it can,

Your ability to hear comes from vibrations generated by sounds entering your ear causing your tympanic membrane (ear drum) to vibrate, conducting these vibrations into your inner ear where they are eventually translated/interpreted into what you hear normally.

Now onto the question of ear wax.

A lot of earwax will obviously impede the process of vibrations from the outside world because the wax will absorb them resulting in your hearing seeming more muffled. However even natural wax build up can result in some hearing deficit, because any obstacles to the flow of vibrations into your tympanic membrane will impede your hearing.

A person who regularly cleans their ears theortically should have better hearing than those who don't but in most cases the difference is negligible.

In closing if you are concerned about your hearing see your GP and never stick anything smaller than your finger into your ear.

I'm a nurse and I have seen people puncture their eardrum using q tips/cotton buds and it is fucking painful.

Word from the wise

Go stick a crayon in your ear and let me know if it affected your hearing.

Yes. My ears have become clogged several times with ear wax. Just get some ear wax removal stuff and put it in there. Then get a syringe that is fairly big and can shoot a lot of water with high pressure, and just clear out your ears, works great.
