Okay, check it out... I have Windows Vista Ultimate x64 w/ 4GB ram (4x 1GB Kingston Hyper-x)

and right now im clocking 92% CPU usage!

im running NOD32, iTunes, AIM, Xfire, Sidebar and uTorrent... not a lot really, oh and two tabs on Firefox... and 95% now!!!

this has happend a few times before and I just dont get wtf is going on!

my computer says that I have 4GB of ram, I thought a few of the sticks could have friend and not said aynthing...

Im looking at my process list, I have 77 processes (incl windows) and the highest is SVCHOST.EXE at 189mb... the second is 22mb, the third is 18mb and then at around the tenth is only 7mb... those numbers dont seem to add up to 3.8GB

help?

svchost.exe is commonly used by viruses and trojans. Reformat/Run virus scan.

Ok, just to be straight, are we talking RAM usage (Thread title) or CPU usage (message)... I am guessing RAM from your post, but want to be sure.

I did a full Scan And Clean incl system folders and shit, pretty complete stuff with NOD32 and I didnt have one "Issue" about 5 hours ago or so, just routinely

It seems that ive dropped to 26 percent when winrar was done, but still im getting high CPU sometimes

Don't reformat yet, first do some virus scans/spyware/rootkits.

Link may help you out

And Dragonclaw is right... Scan for virus and scan for spyware... SVCHOST runs from DLLs which often indicates virus/malware... Check for both.. And what are you scanning with?

yes, RAM, not CPU Usage... CPU usage is remaining 15%-30% (running winrar and shit)

thats from the other day

could someone hook me up with the lagit rootkit shit though? I dont have any sorts on this comp...

And I think SVChost was high because of the extracting the 3.2GB RAR file

and who said anything about a reformat? Its not that terrible, im not running 96% all the time...

Sorry, started my reply before you had that in... I am not familiar with NOD32 so I can't help you out with that. You might check with an alternate program just to be safe.

Maybe uTorrent is downloading something without you knowing. It did that to me once so i've never opened it again. Thats nothing though my old computer would use up 100% cpu usage just running starcraft.

SVChost.exe has nothing to do with extracting RAR files, its the inner networking of the computer. Very commonly used as a virus because there are usually 4 or 5 running at one time dealing with different networking processes and system tasks.

Sort the processes by usage. What's number one? Most likely, it's one of your programs. If so, reinstall it and reboot.

And svchost.exe is a necessary process for windows if you like to use the internet n stuff.

77 processes is a hell of alot man, double mine.

however, i bet its nothnig to do with software, but hardware. I suggest you give ure heatsink and fan a good clean because mine does the exact same thing when it over heats.

SystemIdleProcess is probably taking up a large chunk of it! Oh, and I have 63 processes running.

Who ever says to reinstall is an idiot.  That is a last resort and unnecessary.  follow what Downy said, click on the processes tab and put them in order by mem usage to see which one is hogging all the memory.

I did, its SCVhost and SearchIndexer, then FireFox, the explorer, and then another svchost, then NOD32, aim etc.

and I have a G15, so that adds like 6 processes, like the LCD clock, LCD resource monitor etc... I have a bunch of little processes like that >2mb... so dont worry bout the 77 processes

And for the person who said processor overheat... I have a liquid cooling system that does 60L/h and its  a dual core, processor 1 = 95*F   processor 2= 75*F

room temp is about 72

and the RAM heatsinks are already on there... nothing special, but I do have 5 fans (all 90mm-120mm) incl the PSU fan - ambient temp in case is 86*F (according to my little thermo dangling in the middle of the case)

just information

Sometimes iTunes has a major memory leak. I've left it running for a couple days (and sometimes only a couple hours) and I'll come to find out that it's taking up loads of memory when it shouldn't be. Just restart it. Same with Firefox.

And of course, do what everyone else said and run scans for viruses, spyware, and clean up your registry and anything else (CCleaner is awesome).

hrmm yes... I think that could be the problem, because the problems arose after extended time the comp was running, like I restarted uTorrent and my comp was quicker too... memory leaks on a few things could be the problem

You said SCVhost, not SVChost.

That link provided above says the former is dangerous, the latter not.

Limewire is a dumb place to go.

Not at an attack on piracy, so don't whine.

For those saying 77 processes is a lot, Vista has a lot more than XP. 77 isn't that much really (especially with the G15 crap as well).

Seems to be sorted though.

As a solution to RAM usage problems, reboot is usually a working one.
