If you are thinking of upgrading your system and slapping a shiny new operating system on please, PLEASE take heed..

Microsoft Windows Vista 64bit can only recognise windows certified drivers only!

If you have hardware that doesn't have a windows certified 64bit driver it will not work or it will seriously reduce the expected performance.
I tell you this as it may or may-not be a common bit of info, please check the websites of all your hardware to make sure they have certified 64bit drivers before making the switch.
As of now the amount of drivers for vista 64bit are few and far between.

Bill Gates has argued as early as 1997 that the operating system should only allow approved, digitally "signed" device drivers to be installed. Now it has been confirmed that the 64-bit version of Windows Vista will indeed have this restriction built-in. Even administrators will not be allowed to install unsigned kernel-mode drivers on 64-bit systems. Unsigned drivers that do not run in kernel mode can still be installed by administrators, but not by regular users.

Currently, many device drivers for popular peripherals are unsigned, including some non-WHQL drivers for graphics cards from ATI and Nvidia. Windows XP will warn the user about installing unsigned drivers, but will allow them to be installed anyway. Windows Vista 64-bit will simply refuse to install these drivers. For most companies, obtaining a digital certificate will not be a difficult problem, but hardware devices from smaller companies (and many overseas firms) may wind up simply being unsupported on 64-bit Vista

that is rather annoying, although up to now I've found a workaround or another program for all the programs that don't work
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

come on... There are Vista drivers for everything I could think of... they don't always need to be MS qualified. For example new Catalyst drivers don't need the qualification anymore. And the programs that need the MS qualification, there is a work around going on and rivatuner and atitool for example work just fine now. All this driver bs is overhyped bs. I have been using Vista for few months now and only custom driver I needed was for my sound card. But that was easy to find.

edit: not trying to offend anyone. the op the least. but just wanted to share my thoughts about these vista sucks threads...

the point of this thread was not to crap on vista (i use it the 32bit myself and love it) its just a warning to say that that if you plan on using vista 64bit edition please check and make sure that all your stuff is compatible and you know what your doing. just don't want anyone losing money over this

okay look, article was posted on February 01, 2006... prior to the Vista launch.... So this was news then, but its not really now...

basically, you know how everyone was rushing in the begining to get their shit in gear for vista and in the first weeks of launch, nothing really worked great.... probably the same for this

Now im sure that since Microsoft announced this, and the launch of Windows vista, everyone hurried their asses up to get all their companys drivers, "Certified"

I hardly doubt this is an issue now that the manufactures want their customers to be happy, I think they would have "certified" their hardwares drivers so that it will work on Vista x64 machines....

Old, and now redundant, news.

Not an issue anymore, since virtually everything works on 64-bit Vista. Drivers for Vista 64 are certainly not few and far between, unless you are using extremely outdated hardware.

Anyone upgrading to Vista should DEFINITELY get a 64-bit edition. Anyone who doesn't, unless they have a very specific reason, is very silly.

Wait, you posted this 19 minutes ago? Would of been read-worthy if it was posted 19 months ago.

And, for your information, press F11 when Windows Vista is booting up and driver certification is disabled. The feature is there to protect YOU, the user, and help to maintain the integrity and stability of YOUR system. It's not there to 'gimp' out users, or be a pesky annoyance that doesn't allow 99% of peripherals to work.
