  • Michigan Denies Illegal Immigrants Licenses

    myway.com wrote:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan will no longer let illegal immigrants get driver's licenses, a practice just seven other states continue to allow.Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, who oversees the motor vehicle department, announced the new policy Monday and said it takes effect Tuesday. The new policy also prohibits people who are legal but not permanent U.S. residents from getting licenses. Legislation to allow those on temporary work or student visas to get licenses is pending in the Legislature. The change is aimed at complying with an opinion issued last month by Attorney General Mike Cox, who said granting licenses to illegal immigrants is inconsistent with federal law. Opinions by the attorney general's office are legally binding on state agencies and officers unless reversed by the courts. The new policy applies to first-time applicants for a Michigan driver's license or identification card. Updated procedures for renewals will be released soon."This is one more tool in our initiative to bolster Michigan's border and document security," Land said in a statement. "It also puts Michigan's procedure in line with those of most other states."Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Washington do not require drivers to prove legal status to obtain a license. Michigan borders Canada and contains some of the nation's busiest boundary crossings.Driver's licenses are among several hot-button issues surrounding the debate over illegal immigration. New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer last year proposed allowing illegal immigrants to get licenses, but withdrew the idea under heavy criticism.

  • EX PREZ NODS OFF DURING MLK AWARD PRESENTATION

January 21, 2008 -- Bill Clinton showed yesterday why he made it into the book "The Art of Napping."During an appearance at the Convent Avenue Baptist Church in Harlem, the former president was caught nodding off.Clinton was there during a service to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., while his wife was nearby at Abyssinian Baptist Church, where she was endorsed by its minister, Rev. Calvin Butts.Clinton has had napping episodes before. Among others, he nodded off at a Mets game and at Ronald Reagan's funeral. When he was president, he told Dan Rather, "If I can take a nap, even 15 or 20 minutes in the middle of the day, it is really invigorating to me. On the days when I'm a little short of sleep, I try to work it out so that I can sneak off and just lie down for 15 minutes, a half an hour, and it really makes all the difference in the world." https://www.nypost.com/img/video/thumbs/01212008_clintonsnooze.jpg

  • Web plagiarism a serious problem: UK teachers

    news.yahoo.com wrote:

LONDON (Reuters) - More than half of teachers in a survey said they thought plagiarism from the Internet is a problem. Some students who steal essays wholesale from the Web, they said, are so lazy they don't even bother to take the adverts off the cut-and-pasted text.Fifty-eight percent of the teachers interviewed in the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) questionnaire had come across plagiarism among their sixth-form pupils. Gill Bullen from Itchen College in Southampton for example said pieces handed in by two students were identical and "significantly better than either of them could have done.""Not only that, the essays given in didn't quite answer the title question I had set." A teacher from Leeds said: "I had one piece of work so blatantly 'cut and pasted' that it still contained adverts from the Web page."Connie Robinson from Stockton Riverside College, Stockton on Tees, said: "With less able students it is easy to spot plagiarism as the writing style changes mid-assignment, but with more able students it is sometimes necessary for tutors to carry out Internet research to identify the source of the plagiarism."Mary Bousted, general secretary of the ATL, said: "Teachers are struggling under a mountain of cut-and-pasting to spot whether work was the student's own or plagiarism." She called for robust policies to combat plagiarism, and asked for help from exam boards and the government in providing resources and techniques to detect cheats. The 58 percent of teachers who said plagiarism was a problem estimated over a quarter of work returned by their pupils included plagiarism. But there was another side."I have found once students clearly understand what plagiarism is, its consequences and how to reference correctly so they can draw on published works, plagiarism becomes less of a problem," said Diana Baker from Emmanuel College, Durham."I think the majority of students who engage in plagiarism do it more out of ignorance than the desire to cheat. They really want to succeed on their own merit."

I'm going to a ball on Friday night. I wonder if my gf would be amenable to me escorting her there in a leash...

tbh there's something kinda kinky about that that I quite like.
