Hey guys,

My wife just turned on my PC this morning to check her email and the PC started making a clicking noise ... never done that before. I removed the disks out of my dvd and cd drives and still making it so I shut it off. Rebooted and XP ran a chkdisk program ... no noise now. Is my HDD about ready to self-destruct? It's a 250GB sata. Any suggestions are much appreciated. I only install ram, vid card, and sound cards. All the other hardware is no man's land for me.

its either your HD or a fan. check to make sure there's nothing wedged into a heatsink or anything that would touch the fan blades. how fast was the clicking? what pitch?

No seriously, i think your HDD might really be dyeing. I would backup all the data. How old is the HDD?

HDD is a little over 3 years old. The clicking was every 1 or 2 seconds and not sure what pitch.

A clicking noise is the buffering head constantly trying to write / restart, and is normally an indication that a hard-drive is on the way out.

Happened to a 500Gb SATA2 Western Digital AAKS drive of mine last week, I have since RMA'd it.

Backup all of your system now and pray .♦

Yep, I was just going to ask if the HD is a Western Digital. Those things self-destruct after about 2,5 years. It starts with the clicking. I bought 3 Western Digitals once and they all failed within 2 months of each other.

From what I've been reading in review of the WD HDDs the Raptors are their most solid product. Guess it's luck of the draw.

Edit: Seagate is good, yes?

I also have a 500gb my book with 60% full already. I don't want it to die.

I heard Seagate is good but then again i also heard WD is good...

My raptor shafted itself in like 3 months, and I got screwed by WD, saying that it wasn`t in warranty etc

Think I might invest in an external HDD if I have to replace my internal. How bout 320GB Seagate internal and 200GB external?

No specific 'make' of hard-drive are pre-destined to fail, or last longer than others. Both Seagate and Western Digital are very respectable manufacturers- yet sadly hard-drives in general as a component are a bit hit and miss (see my 'HDD Lottery FTL' thread). Due to lots of fragile parts, an easy susceptibility to damage, and a plethora of possible issues that can arise... your internal HD's are generally the components with the shortest life expectancy. Now, this isn't to say that every hard-drive should be replaced within 2 years of use. I've had some drives that lasted 10 years, and others that have barely made it 10 weeks. All I can say is this: run Chkdsk often, have Windows schedule routine defragments, and always keep your hard-drive cool and stable. Take care of it, and it will take care of your important data... theoretically .

Re: Internal or External:

I would generally say external if you want to backup your important media or files (plug'n'play interface for the win)- so that you can quickly backup media libraries that can easily be transferred and/or accessed from another machine. A secondary internal drive is always a good idea though-- as you can backup entire partitions as image files (or direct copies)- and then never have to lose anything. Why only save your media and important documents when you can completely bypass the entire inconvenience of reformatting in the first place?

Ran WD diagnostics ... SMART status says fail and under properties in the diagnostics Drive Health says warning. Soooo, if you don't see me for awhile I'm waiting for a new drive to arrive from Newegg. Thanks for all your help!

I don't have much experience with WD, but I will comment on my Seagate - It's been making funny "about to explode-violently-chirping" noises ever since I installed it. It probably had something to do with it being DROPPED about 3 1/2 feet during install....

This was over a year ago. It's still working fine as my primary drive.
