Ok this is a weird one. Here goes.

This has happened about 5 or 6 times the first time being one and a half years ago. It happened again.

I use the main user account that windows creates when it is installed. Usually defaulted as "Owner", my mother has her own user account on the computer as well. Nothing EVER happens to mine. My user account is always perfectly fine, but my mothers is always fucked up. Now the thing that happened 5 times in the past few years happened again, and heres what it is.

All files that are in FOLDERS get corrupted. Pictures are corrupted and there is no picture and the file cant be open. Text files are filled with lines of "rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" or very weird symbols you dont see very often like the copyright sine and a double upside down T. PDF files are corrupted, docs, rtfs, everything that is IN folders. Any of those said file types outside folders remain completely fucking fine. I am at a total fucking loss as to what causes this to happen only on my mothers end of the PC. Has this happened to anyone or am I alone in this weird stage of events?

No heard of that before. Have you tried deleting her account and creating a new one? + the usual AV scan etc

Ive completely erased the hard drive at least 3 times since the first time it happened for unrelated reasons and it still happens.

What I would do is completely reformat your hard drive, being sure to save any important files to a disk/flash drive, reinstall the operating system, and then do NOT use the "Owner" account again.  Make seperate administrator accounts for you and your mom.

save her mydocs, and delete her user profile.  it will be recreated the next time she logs on.  see if the problem is gone.  in all honesty, it sounds like a pebkac to me.

The "Owner" account has never had any problems though. I wouldnt exactly be pleased if by making another account for myself all my shit got fucked up if that happened again. I should be recieving a 250GB external HD sometime today so if I choose to reformat my PC then Ill have most things backed up.

How would that help if it deletes everything on the user profile? The problem seems to happen randomly every once in a while. I cant really think of anything being done that was done the last 5 times this happened. Quite odd. lol@pebkac

How is it like fucking weird problems? Aren't they a bit... Abstract for that?
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Fucking as a verb - You are fucking [two] weird problems.

And SuperPea... I abandoned him.

so it comes and goes?  thats fucked up, never heard of anything like that...  windows uses the hidden "default" user profile as a template when a new user logs on.  the corruption could be coming from there.  but what you describe as it just sort of happens over time, is really weird.

My PC has always been retarded with dual user accounts. Ever since I bought it 4 years ago the second account created is always fucked up over time for some reason. I blame gateway.

Weord problem. Never heard of a case that weird before. Only thing you can try is formatting your hard drive and starting fresh.

I erase the hard drive and reinstall windows with a restore CD. It doesnt leave anything behind.

aha!  ditch the restore CD... they are notoriously buggy, especially with those preconfigured images.  you're much better off using a plain vanilla XP cd, and doing the drivers on your own.  i've done tech support for a loooong time, and gateway restore cd's are completely worthless.

edit: what i meant about one of the cab files being bad was that one of the installer files on the CD itself might be screwed.  so even after a reformat it could just be copying corrupted data back to the HD from the cd.

I dont have a windows XP CD, lol. Also my PC is ancient, I dont expect to find drivers for it other than on that CD, even the gateway site is useless for that. Its shitty drivers fuck shit up instead of updating it.

well, maybe you can get away with system restore.  if the shit goes bananas again, try to use the windows sys restore to revert back to when it was working.  but you might have to live with it unfortunately... sorry i cant help more.
