Humans are on the verge of artifically creating life. You can transport your torahs, korans and bibles to the nearest recycling centre at your earliest convenience.

they'll probably kill these scientists like they kill doctors who perform abortions.  only god can give life and only god can taketh away.

Clarify-

"Life"- Getting something to create strings of proteins and perform functions much like a biologically created cell would do..... Not really life, just biological programming.

well, i didnt mean that we'll have armies of clones fighting us, just that this technology could possibly (like everything else i guess) be used to do more harm than good.

There's already a way for us to make large numbers of people to form armies, and that way's more fun .

So a very interesting scientific discovery...and now we're supposed to do away with the religions of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity? Because of a scientific discovery?

You imply that religion and science can't coexist. For some reason, this all sounds familiar. The two concepts are not mutually exclusive, Cam.

The ability to create something living out of something inanimate is supposedly the preserve of deities, no? Pulling it off will also give the creationists something to think about.

As far as i understand it they still can't make it from scratch, they are only able to manipulate already excisting cells, and it's synthetic not artificial meaning the development of selfawareness is highly unlikely and the ability to selfreproduction will not yield any Terminators while we are still alive ...

So don't get the book/scroll fires started just yet

There was a group of scientists and they were all sitting around discussing which one of them was going to go to God and tell Him that they didn't need him anymore.

One of the scientists volunteered and went to go tell God he was no longer needed.

The scientist says to God - "God, you know, a bunch of us have been thinking and I've come to tell you that we really don't need you anymore. I mean, we've been coming up with great theories and ideas, we've cloned sheep, and we're on the verge of cloning humans. So as you can see, we really don't need you."

God nods understandingly and says. "I see. Well, no hard feelings.
But before you go let's have a contest. What do you think?"

The scientist says, "Sure. What kind of contest?"
God: "A man-making contest."

The scientist: "Sure! No problem".
The scientist bends down and picks up a handful of dirt and says, "Okay, I'm ready!"

God replies, "No, no, no...you go get your own dirt."

It's the preserve of deities only if you believe that it is. There's nothing in any of those books (at least that I'm aware of) that precludes man being able to make scientific discoveries, is there?

And you're right, it may give the strict, literal creationists something to think about...but it won't change their minds.

I found this interesting:

The group hopes eventually to use engineered genomes to make organisms that can produce clean fuels and take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
That would be awsm

Incorrect.  God created something from nothing.  Scientists are fiddling with what already exists.

"We're simply re-writing the operating software for cells - we're not designing a genome from the bottom up - you can't drop a genome into a test tube and expect it to come to life"

Lulz. Humans giveth life, and humans can taketh away. Women give birth to children, and also we can kill each other. Your statement if false.

Well of course. But if we could produce these organisms ourselves that would be a big step forward I think
