i just reformatted my moms computer and when i went to reinstall the drivers for her wireless adapter i hit a wall.

for whatever reason the computer won't recognize its existence, and therefore it won't allow me to install the drivers. its not showing in the device manager at all.

its a dlink dwl-g510, if that helps.

anybody have any ideas? i don't really want to shell out for a new one.

Search for the drivers on the manufacturers web page and install them yourself.

....thats what i did. you can't install the drivers if the computer doesn't know the thing exists. they won't work.

the device manager will not list the wireless card as existing. i don't really know how to explain further.

assuming its a desktop open up the case and unplug it and plug it back in, maybe the cable is loose it happens

also make sure there are no interferences around cordless phone, microwave or bluetooth devises

tried it. as an aside it has no cable, as its a PCI card.

i also tried pulling it out, booting, installing, putting it back in, rebooting, and going. nothing.

also do u see any lights on the back of the card?if u see none there is no physical connection between the card and the network.

hey also sometimes it wont pick it up at first u might have to install the driver from ur motherboard CD, or the CD that came with the device.

also according to the manual on what some said.

The manual says to install drivers only if the card is not in the pc then shut down, put in card and boot up, then do more stuff.

Check the PCI addresses in the BIOS, it may be sharing an address with another device.

[Edit] Device addresses are called IRE's.  Make sure none of them are the same, but DON'T change any of them if none of them match.

[Edit 2] Also, are you changing OS's, or just reformatting with the same OS?  And, are you reformatting a manufacture install, or a previous home reformat?

My bad, they are called IRQ's, not IRE's.  Been awhile since the 'ol A+ cert.

@ nem: its the only PCI device installed, so i don't think thats the issue. reformatting with the same os (XP), off of an OEM install disk.

Does the device show up in the BIOS?

If not, and all IDE slots are active, then something is broken.
