Is there a difference between the SC and the SSC models of the 8800GT other than the clock frequencies? Are they built different in any way at all?
Nope, only GPU and Memory clocks, which can be changed by ntune, riva tuner or ATI tool.

So pretty much all companies sell overclocked cards with no fan/heatsink differences for $20-$50 more, when it's possible to do it yourself...for free? Well that makes sense.
yep, thats marketing for you.
The memory and GPU chips sold on SC and SSC cards typically overclock better than those on stock cards.
So there is a difference, they have different mem/gpu chips?nukchebi0 wrote:

Overclocking yourself voids your warranty. If it comes factory overclocked it still has it's warranty. As far as I know there is no other difference. It's a lot cheaper to just do it yourself. I also highly recommend RivaTuner over nTune.
Some times there are differences, like eVGA with there Super Overclocked GTX cards, different heat sinc, and they now do a dual slot cooler for the 8800GT (not the same as the GTS cooler). XFX put the Alpha dog GT on a different PCB with a larger fan on the heat sinc in some of there higher clocked versions.aimless wrote:

And like TimmmmaaaaH said, the OC is guarenteed, so theres an element of peace and mind there. The card has been tested at the factory and runs stable at it's higher speeds, if you do it yourself, you will probably be alright, but there is always that risk.
Seems there are lots of people who dont want to take that risk, or simply dont want to get into the whole OC yourself.

Buy the cheapest possible. Overlocking the GPU is just so easy. You just have to move a slider and monitor the Temperature. After all, no one will be able to tell whether you overclocked or not, as long as you reset the speed, that's if the GPU fails.
