I know they're trying to stimulate the economy, but an extra few hundred bucks for everyone isn't going to do shit. Our economy is in a rut right now and people are wanting to save their money rather than spend it. Who wants to spend money when a dollar is worth shit?
This was an attempt at a short-term solution for a long-term problem.
And someone else earlier asked how our government was poor. We're in major debt and we've borrowed loads of money from other countries, China being one. So by doing a tax cut, we're just digging ourselves deeper into a hole.

Tax the fuck out of everyone for one year. Have 1 miserable year and it would solve a lot. When the year is up you can even make it a celebration day like with everything else, and eat more on that day.
They're not trying to pay off the national debt (cash owed to other countries), it's trying to fix the budget deficit (gap between spending in budget and money taken in from taxes and whatnot). I'll be paying down debt with it. Bonus last year paid off a car, bonus + tax rebate this year will pay off the rest of our credit card debt and leave us w/ just the mortgage.

(4) Paying down debt and saving money is good for the economy as it frees up capital to be applied elsewhere.

Well I assumed that since this was a discussion on the American economy, we were only talking about America, not any third-world countries or anything. When I said our government was poor, I meant that as a comparison to other times in our history. Sure it's not the Great Depression or anything, but we still have a big national debt.
I'm gonna buy a fat sack of buds.

I think I'm going to spend some of it on a new AR15. And some ammo for it and my AK. I've also been thinking of investing in some reloading equipment.

This is an appeasement strategy that will never work. It astounds me that they think they can get a .7% GDP jump from this money. Many, many, many people will either use it to pay their credit card debt, or they'll put it in the bank, or they'll make a principal payment on their mortgage or something, and very, very few people will take that money and go to Target.
What we need to do, assuming we're interested in this kind of thing, is to send everyone a preloaded Visa card worth $300 that you activate with your social security number over the telephone. From there we further couple the desire to spend by mandating a Friday, Saturday, Sunday sales tax holiday with NO sales tax be it federal, local, or state.
People will rush out, and spend the shit out of that money. Sure we won't garner a bunch of tax dollars from it, but it will stimulate the economy like a motherfucker.
