I wouldn't trust ebay. I usually look at local cars for sale on craigslist.

There's nothing wrong with it and you can get a great bargain. You still have to go and drive the car, you've got to be really dumb to bid on something you've never seen in the flesh and actually driven.

Find a couple of good cars that are in your price range, contact the seller and go and drive the car.

depends. i wouldn't buy a car that i couldn't look at before the transaction, ever. if you're going to buy from ebay, make sure its within a decent distance from you so you don't get scammed.

Just be careful too. Everyone here has pretty much hit the nail on the head, with the look at it / drive it before buying. Was about to get a pickup I'd seen online, then went to look at it, the whole hood was rusted off, the pictures sure as hell didn't show that though.

My neighbors friends got totaly ripped off on ebay. Sent him a car that was less than half of what it was supose to be.
You also have to pay for shipping $500 to $1000? now I would just spend a couple extra bucks and get a car localy.
What car is going to be so special that you would take a gamble like that?

I have a client who buys cars from ebay all the time.   he buys exotics and luxury cars.  as far as I know he has had few problems. at least the cars he gives me to do paint work on.  the only one I know he had some bad luck with was the Ferrari F355.  it had a bad clutch and it cost him 5.000 to fix it.

I think he deserved it if he was stupid enough to do that.

I know plenty of people who have bought cars on ebay. just make sure you are in driving distance so you can actually go take a look at it.

A lot of car sellers on ebay will let you view the car before bidding. Its ok if its local.

I was looking for a car a few weeks ago on both Auto trader and Ebay and most of the time you would see the same car listed on both sites. Also there are a few cars listed on ebay that are just classified adds example

My dad bought a BMW off ebay this summer. Just make sure you buy it from a good seller. He looked at a couple, and the dealer he ended up buying it from had tons of really good feedback, and they even bought a carfax on the car and gave it to him before he bought it and everything. The car is pretty good, there were a couple minor maintenance issues, but I'd say if you pick a good seller you can get a good deal.

At the very least get a CARFAX report on any car you are seriously thinking of buying off ebay, or really any car for that matter.  I know there have been a lot of people cleaning up flood cars from katrina and reselling them with clean titles.

Ebay often has partnerships with mechanics or auto shops in certain areas that will check out the car/run diagnostics to ensure you don't get a lemon (a shitty used car proffered as a decent one).  If you can, find a car from someone in your area so you can check on it yourself.  If this is also unrealistic and you still want to go through the internet, check and see if there is a carmax.com dealership or affiliate in your area.  They are reliable and legitimate in regards to selling used cars over the internet, and often you can have them ship a car from another carmax affiliate or dealership for a small fee.  You can also get free history reports on cars through them.
