thats definitely the skeleton of what you posted earlier, so i think your problem is that you're goofing something when you plug in. double check?
Oh, thanks. I usually just ignore it after it served its purpose in a u-substitution.S.Lythberg wrote:

Doesn't 3secu=x?
In this case, its 3x3
Thus, 3/4x4.
I think this works.
Although it seems way too simple.
3(3)secusecusecu
3(3secu3secu3secu)
3(x*x*x)
3x3
Unless I messed up the algebra by assuming something wrong, it appears to work here.
k=secu
dk=secutanu du
dk/secutanu=du
9k3dk
9/4k4=Integral
9/4(secutanu)2(secutanu)2
secu
yeah, sec(sec-1x/3) drops, but where does the radical come from?Ender2309 wrote:

Are you in AB or BC?
college, already finished AP calc two years ago... (got a 5 btw)nukchebi0 wrote:

You took AP Calc as a junior, then?
Also, this class can't be much above the AB I am in right now, because the concepts are nearly identical to what we are currently learning.

its all taken a step above, and please drop the elitist attitude, for your own sake. nobody cares that its not much above what you took. he's clearly intelligent if he got a five on the AP test.nukchebi0 wrote:

@ lyth: thats a good question. i can't figure it out. lemme see what the calculator can do.
assuming you opt to take the AP credit (i didn't, needed a refresher), you'll start at this class.nukchebi0 wrote:

Have fun, its a blast
no calculators on the test, its gotta come out of my head...Ender2309 wrote:

im guessing it must come from the tan(sec-1(x/3)) term
its gotta, but i can't figure it out. this is a hard one. i'm guessing the test is tommorow?S.Lythberg wrote:

quiz thursday.
test should be MUCH easier, the TA likes fast grading, not overly complex stuff like this.
edit: I just don't like not being able to figure something out...

What elitist attitude? I just mentioned the concepts don't seem different than the standard AP Calculus, which I am in. I also never said he's stupid, and I know he is smart by the fact he finished as a finalist for the NMS competitions.Ender2309 wrote:

well thats good then, and i know the feeling. i hate leaving a question blank.S.Lythberg wrote:

@nuk: the way you said it suggests you think his class is really similar to your high school one, which makes you sound arrogant.
well, this will be one for the discussion section tomorrow...
I'd say 95% solved is almost as good.
and Nukchebi0, good luck on the AP test in a few months, but you're right, it's only a little above calc BC, but nobody said calc BC was easy either. (I won the NMS btw)

Won, as in #1 in the nation? You aced the PSAT?and Nukchebi0, good luck on the AP test in a few months, but you're right, it's only a little above calc BC, but nobody said calc BC was easy either. (I won the NMS btw)
And how hard is the AP test? I heard you only need 5-7 of the points on the free response questions to get a 5.
Thanks, too.
Poor diction on my part, then. Sorry.@nuk: the way you said it suggests you think his class is really similar to your high school one, which makes you sound arrogant.

@nuk: sorry if i came off as an asshole about it. i used to be like that and i paid hard for it.
....and by the way...AP calc AB ftw.

Good thing calculus is still 1 year away for me.
High five!Ender2309 wrote:

AB > BC

AP test wasn't bad at all, mostly pretty basic concepts, just hidden behind scary looking numbers, and not a lot of multi-multi-multi-step problems like that ^^^^ one. FYI, the AB test is harder than the BC, go figure...nukchebi0 wrote:

fuck

calculus is actually the most fun math i've ever been in. rarely is it this hard, especially in highschool. the best part of calc is that you get away from all the idiots who beg the teacher to repeat literally everything that just came out of his mouth.Ryan wrote:

@cowami: yes!
@lyth: when you think about it it makes sense. calculus is geared towards simplifying everything. in BC you do more calc and less late trig/early calc than in AB, which is a little bit easier.
Yeah, I do enjoy calculus more than other math.Ender2309 wrote:

true, AB was more trig centered, while BC focused on integrals, which i find much easier (I just can't visualize arctangent or secant2, so I never know if I'm right)Ender2309 wrote:

i think its because its actually applied to things. i've always been a fan of word problems, and we have a lot in calc, which i think is part of it.nukchebi0 wrote:

I liked basic derivatives...they make so much sense.
But that sounds good, BC being less trig oriented. I like trig as trig, but not just using trig functions in Calculus.
The fact that the concepts still make sense is nice too.

Yes, the applications are great. I love being able to calculate how far something has gone solely by doing a simple integration of a velocity function, or finding somethings optimal conditions.Ender2309 wrote:
