I'm in the market for a new desktop pc. Not sure what would be worth it. My g/f and I were looking at this.

Dell
XPS 420
High style, cutting-edge performance and professional-grade options.
Introducing the high-style XPS 420, offering cutting-edge performance and professional-grade features designed to help you achieve creative mastery.
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo and Core™ 2 Extreme processors up to 130W
Genuine Windows Vista®  Home Premium
Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator 3100 (integrated) or optional NVIDIA GeForce Go 8400M GS with 128MB GDDR3 dedicated graphics memory
1-4GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM Up to 667MHz

Any opinions would be appreciated. I don't want to buy crap.

-The graphics will be crap, no matter what option you choose
-They don't provide the model of the processor, so I can't tell you if it's extreme or not but it's probably pretty decent.
-Vista is slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
-That RAM is slow, the standard is 800MHz

I've had two people in my family recently buy that same machine - both with the quad core.
At the very least choose choose one of the higher video options (8800gt).

I've just ordered and help set up 2 of these within the last month ...
The processor is a Q6600. Not bad for the money.

Is that an option?  The OP didn't post it so I figured it wasn't.

Yeah its an option, the video by default is shit ... and the default 3GB of ram has a speed of 667.

You won't build one?   Makes me sad when someone submits to just buying a computer.  Building not only saves you money, it's a great experience and you'll have a boatload of knowledge about your parts and diagnosing problems, etc.

Do you just want to buy something already put together or build something yourself ?

Alright, I just built a friend's computer for around $500, excluding the graphics card.  That's up to you.  It's a pretty good system IMO (decent for overclocking), but let others here verify that before you go buying parts.

You definitely can spend more than him (he was broke), so I would go with a 680mobo instead of that 650i.  And as for a video card, I'd go with a 8800GT or a G92 8800GTS.

Wow, what the fuck was I thinking.  You don't want to build it.

You aren't going to fuck it up, there are loads of (video)guids on the internet, we'll help you out, and  you could even ask your handy neighbour or cousin to build it for you for $10!

You are never going to get a decent PC for under $1000 if you aren't going to build it yourself, there will always be shitty parts in a pre-build pc.
