while we're at it lets get rid of all the useless stupid math you learn.
Everything... grade 8 and up could be pretty much taken out, and replaced with a Business Management/Career Building class and everyone would be way better off in life.

Well, Some math is helpful, but why would we need to know how to solve an equation by factoring and stuff?

And what about everyone that doesn't go into a business career?

I know people that do trig and more advanced math all day long in their everyday fields; my father being one of them.  He'd have been canned years ago if he couldn't do some of that stuff, which is much more useful to him than a business class.

The whole point of fractions is to be able to express numbers with exact values.  Write out 1/3 as a decimal asshole. That and how would you even manage to understand calculus concepts like the quotient rule and most trigonometry concepts without fractions? Fuck that guy is stupid.

Lets build a building with nothing management skills. No need to know how to calculate the forces on a building, because you know BUSINESS MANAGEMENT!

You seem to forget that adults can learn too.

It's called college. and extra classes, and BOCES.

Learn it when you need it, not when you 'Might need it someday' Because you know damn well unless you keep using those things you learn in school on a regular basis your gunna forget them.
Thats why kids are rusty when they come in from summer break to the new school year.

Son, are you some kind of moron?

Do you not realize the obvious benefits of learning higher math?  And I use the term "higher math" loosely.  Algebra, trigonometry, and geometry are hardly advanced, yet that is what New York State teaches in grades 9-11.

So put the burden on higher institutions to waste 1 or 2 years of undergraduate work catching up on the basics?  That is a monumental waste of time and resources when high school can have you learn it earlier.

I spent my entire freshman year in introduction and foundation courses, and that is on top of having 30 credit hours from high school.  If I hadn't taken those extra courses earlier, I would not have graduated with dual degrees because I would not have had the time.

Why would a business manager build a building? He manages the people who work in the completed structure

And Mitch I'd rather replace English with this "Business" course... frankly all schools in the US, both private and public should have some sort of "Life Skills" class. God knows I'd be better off having a basic grasp of economics and how to budget and save than knowing how to explicate poetry.

By replacing English I mean things like the aforementioned explicating poetry or analyzing literature. I hate it but people should be educated enough to know how to write coherently.

That doesn't both me though, as I'm good for all fractions down to 64th in my head and can convert them to decimals instantly.  When you said that, I just knew it was 7/16".  =/  If not, a few seconds on a calculator to multiply x/64 by .015625 cures it.

A lot of CAD work at a very young age will do that to you.

My grade 11 English university course is a joke.  we had one small unit on essay writing.  the rest of the year we read:
-Shakespeare (alright i guess because "if you can understand and comprehend Shakespeare you can understand and comprehend anything",
-the five people you meet in heaven (fucking waste of my time, we talked about heaven every class, it was bullshit...though i do go to a catholic highschool )
- and finally, To kill a mockingbird, which is a good piece of literature, an american classic if you will, but I would rather have spent my time excelling in grammar, and my ability to write.

plus the mandatory gym class is garbage as well.  I'm not over weight or unable to do athletic things, I just don't like the course

oh well.

If they make you take essay tests every single time you read a book, you will get better at writing.

"In 780 out of 790 tests, the acid created an unstable reaction with the uranium fuel. We thus believe that the acid is, in its present form, not suitable for mixing with the fuel."

Just a random thing I pulled out of my ass. If I was in some sort of nuclear chemistry research group, I think that sentence would get the point across (obviously there would be more Sciencespeak but you get the idea)

Then your English class shouldn't be considered university.

I'm in regular ol' sophomore (high school) and that's all we do. We read, we write. We read, we write. It's almost a rebel chant. Point is I was pretty good at persuasive writing in the beginning of the year, and half way through I'm at the top of the class. Most everyone else has improved as well, save for the girl that comes to class smelling like pot, only to leave 15 minutes later with a slip to the nurse.

Anyways, what were we talking about again? Oh right, fractions. Fuck this guy. If he so chooses to use whatever method he wants long live him. Each one has it's advantages. Decimal is more direct, general fractions can be more accurate and are crucial in industries like design, carpentry and cooking like it said in the article. How he can dismiss that as a weak argument is trying to play to your audience instead of saying something with any solid ground.

Alrighty then, that guy should stick to teaching.

a) "Is the cup half empty or half full?"

b) "Is the cup .5 empty or .5 full?"

Answer: Drink the cup.
