Here's the situation, My parents shop got broken into last nite and the bastards stole most of the cigarettes which was worth a lot.
Now using the CCTV program that they have, I have burned the footage from the cameras which shows them stealing etc. onto a cd in .avi format.... I viewed the file perfectly fine at the pc which has the CCTV program on it.

I came home and put the files onto my hard drive. Now whenever I try to open the file I get a message saying "COM Surrogate has stopped working." WTF does this mean? And also it causes any media player to crash, divx, media player. However when I tried opening it with VLC player, it didnt crash but VLC player didn't play it.

Any help would be much appreciated, Thanks.

Both of the PC's have VISTA.

if that doesn't work, your particular error had 68000 hits on google.

Thanks for this thread in general, I have that COM Surrogate error a lot.. Also sorry to hear about the theft, hope you can catch them or claim the money from insurance.

Cheers, we can claim it back on insurance just the hassell of it etc. cos insurance companies tend not to want to pay up without proof, which is why I'm trying to sort it out.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Could it possibly be a codec problem?  The computer with the CCTV would obviously have all the required codecs, but the other machines may not.

Try using this program to detect what codec is used for the audio and video, and make you you get those codecs on the other machine.

Try different filetypes (ie: not .AVI)

Also, check if it plays on DVD players (check if it can read .avi first quite alot of them can, infact I think the PS3 can too with the update)

If it's any consolidation, at least you know they'll die a painful, cancerous death in the future.
