Try doing Calculus with decimals. Then do it using fractions and see how much easier it is with them. This guy needs to reconsider his position.

I agree with Mitch about the grade 9 and above maths is MOSTLY going to be useless. It becomes option in years 11 and 12 in aus, but still, that's two years of maths that I KNOW I won't use in the line of work I am most likely choosing. Should become optional at an earlier age, considering the higher levels of maths is only ever used in very particular, narrow working fields.

That said I would probably choose to continue maths up to where I have just because it looks good on a resume, even if your job has little to do with maths.

do you know how much you would hate spending your time going over and over perfecting grammar? thats what editors are for. and if you have a keen interest to write you should do it in your own time anyway. do you think a soccer player just plays soccer in PE class?

reading books isn't so bad. i don't know what the percentages are but i'm sure kids aren't reading as many books as much they should.

Hell no, school ruins books for a lot of kids.
I was forced to read stupid books that i didn't want to read, and it made me hate books. Now i rarely read a book. I think its a waste of time, ide much rather play a fantasy game, or watch a fantasy movie, then read a fantasy book tbh.

Just a word for those hoping to be the next person who creates the Unreal Engine killer or work for Google, you better have some serious math and physics skills.

As for reading, sorry to say, but fewer people read these days.  Reading nurtures ones creative ability far more than the related movie or video game.

Everything... grade 8 and up could be pretty much taken out, and replaced with a Business Management/Career Building class and everyone would be way better off in life.

Son, are you some kind of moron?

Do you not realize the obvious benefits of learning higher math?  And I use the term "higher math" loosely.  Algebra, trigonometry, and geometry are hardly advanced, yet that is what New York State teaches in grades 9-11.
The brain learns things easier while your young.

Also, Business Management is for idiots.

Have you ever built something?  Use trig for angles and lengths.  That is but one of MANY ways to use math.

Don't be an idiot.  I use math ALL THE TIME.  I even use calculus ALL THE TIME.  It's not even something I think about anymore.  It just happens.

Yep.  Stagnate that vocabulary.  If I didn't read, I would go insane.  I just wish I had more time to read more books...

Right.  What is your chosen career path?

Making higher math optional will only serve to produce increasingly ignorant youth, with no meaningful problem solving and critical thinking skills.

WTf how do you express something like n(n+1)(2n+1) over 6 without fractions ?

As soon as there are variables in your calculations, you must use fractions.

Fractions for life.

Give me an example of when you've analyzed a poem / book / whatever irl

The fields I want to go in either involve being very fit (military) or liking math and science (engineering, medicine or biochem/biotech, etc).

I don't mind reading Shakespeare, poetry etc... I hate having to analyze it. The reason I'd read books and plays is for enjoyment.

And meh, I don't really need grammar or spelling classes. I'm not planning on becoming a writer, so my grammar and spelling skills are more than proficient enough for every other field of work you can think of.

A's and second best in my grade, according to end of year report != failing.

edit: And I'm planning on going into either Psychology, IT or accounting. And the sort of maths I've learnt in the past year, and this coming year are all useless in these areas. Accounting is the only one mildly math based and in reality it's still only very simple mathematics that I could have done without all of last years mathematic classes.
