Ok. This is the problem:

Some idiot keeps flaming me that you can't compare single, dual and quad core CPUs and the new GFX cards with multiple cores to single core GPUs because it is "unfair"....

he fails to even read my posts properly....
and his posts are just so ridiculous...

I mean after all, it is fair to compare the performance of a single core cpu to that of a dual core.
I guess it's also fair to compare a PC with 1 dimm of 4 megs of ram to a PC with 1 dimm of 4 gigs of ram. Or hard drives of a similar ridiculously unbalanced sort. Throw everything out! It's all fair game!!!

...I fail to see the logic behind this.

You compare a single die gpu to a single die gpu. Not a single to a dual or a quad, octo or whatever comes next. Don't be ridiculous.
Is this what AMD and ATi have resorted to? "Well we can't beat them FAIRLY (ie core vs core), so we'll throw the rule book out and beat them on ANOTHER level." "

You win at price performance, not how that is achieved (unless looking at power/cooling). If AMD managed to get a dual-GPU solution for the same price as a single one of Intel, their core architecture may be weaker, the cards they are presenting is not.

Let me rephrase that, you're right any hardware can be compared to another piece of the same type of component. However, they just want verification, however little, of their opinion.

Well, comparing 4MB of RAM vs 4GB of RAM is a very fair benchmark indeed, as long as they're based on the same architecture/made for the same purpose. Of course the 4MB will be signifigantly slower than the 4GB on memory-demanding applications, but it's still comparable to the 4GB. So, with that, you're actually proving yourself wrong.

Imagine that scenario, and a program that requires 3MB of RAM. That would give the 4GB absolutely no advantage, if they're at the same speed.

With these graphics cards, it's the exact same issue. They display graphics on a monitor. They just do it at different speeds. They're very comparable indeed, and saying that they're not, is just idiotic.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I'm not a die hard fan of either in fact I've said many many times I want ATi to do something good (long term) so nVidia has competition. I've owned PCs and Macs for over 20 years of varying brands; I have no loyalty to any of these companies.
