Ok so i have a wireless router and another computer with a wireless card. both are netgear. when i first set the card up in the computer it could find the router and connect to it, but the signal was really bad. now it can't see the router at all but it can pick up someone elses network. so the card works its just not finding the right router.

can anyone think of why it can't pick up my router? the only thing i can think of is that the signal mustn't be able to reach the computer. we have brick walls. its probably only 15 meters apart but there are a couple of walls in the way. obviously im not exactly sure how the router sends and recieves signals but is it possible there is to much in the way?

the other thing is both the card and the router are about 2 or 3 years old now.

Did you make sure the signal the router is putting out matches the card? For example, is your router set to G but your card is B? Try and set the router to either mixed mode, or what ever type of wireless card you have.

I have a feeling you're right about the brick walls. The signal is pretty weak on most wireless routers, especially if they're a few years old. Do you have a way to bring your computer closer to the router for testing purposes?

its on g and b, and the card has everything ticked (by default).

yeah i can move the computer. it will just be a pain in the ass. actually (might be a dumb question) but i could test the router out by moving it closer to the pc right? i mean i don't have a phone line in there. but it should be able to pick up the router even though its not connected to the internet.

Had the same problem. Lynksys though and no brick wall to get through. Both computers Had the exact same card but little version diff. Anyway mine picked up signal perfect my girls could not see it no matter what, but it would see our neighbors. ??? I was at a loss. Well I had to format her drive anyway so reinstalled every thing: xp home, drivers, etc. And it worked fine. must have been a windows deal? Also I had to switch the router to transmit the SSID. I hope you will not have to go through the whole C format. Like I said I had to do that for another prob.

Also you might pick up better antenna. Assuming you are using a standard.

well i moved the router in there and it saw it. so its a signal problem. but. even when it was right next to the pc it said its strength was only 71%.

how would i interpret that? new router/card or try and format?

btw im on a wireless laptop now and it says there is full strength so i'm guessing it might be a card problem.

The card is down the back of the computer. Its lost reception because its down thar. Point the antenna up btw.

Cable router? you can call them and have them give you another cable line in any room "typically". Then you can just move the router in your computer room.

Other options: Run Cat5 wire, remember the longer the cable the worse the degradation. Pick up bigger antenna that I linked to earlier and cross fingers.
The hi gain antenna really worked for me when i lived at an apt.
Also about the FORMAT,,, We should not even talk about that at this stage because that is Defcon billion. Don't do it unless its your last step. The computer I had to do it to had serious registry problems. And I had lots of free time since I just quit my job:)
