While playing commander the other day, I realized that I have no idea how artillery kills are counted. There's no "artillery kill" stat that I know of. So if I kill 20 players with arty during a game, does my total kill count go up, but specific weapon/vehicle/explosive count stays the same? I've used arty to help achieve some of the ribbons/medals that have kill requirements in a round. Just not sure what they get classified as.
Your total kill count does not increase with artillery kills unless you resign as commander before the shells hit.
It does increase your kit kill count however, and can be used to get the 40+ kills in one round badges, etc

Your total kills go up, but not your kills per-round. They show up as a discreptancy between your kills with weapons and vehicles and your total kills.
Yes, they can be used to get badges. That's how you get your ground defense badges.

Easy way to boost your K/D ratio if that matters to you.
If, of course, you want your stats as a status symbol and not a performance tracker.
I just use it to get particularly difficult badges while racking up time on kits/common vehicles.
Although nobody expects someone to actually be DEFENDING the uncap, so it turns out that sitting in ground/air defense is handy.
