Hey BF2s,

Ok my CPU has gone to waste I think, let me start at the beginning.
About an hour ago I wanted to play some BF2 with my clanmates, so I start up BF2 and start loading into a server, but I noticed the loading is taking ages, but whatever might have to clean my HDD. So I get ingame and notice I have retarded lag, so WTF? I minimize the game, load up Fraps and it only records 20 FPS, again WTF, I am supposed to hit around 80/90 FPS. So I disconnect, quit, reboot and see that my CPU is running at 1 GHZ instead of 2.4 and the FSB multiplier has dropped to 5x instead of 12. Now the problems start, I can't change the FSB multiplier myself, well one problem led to another as I did the most stupidest thing ever, I increased the CPU frequency by like 70. (Flame me after this is solved, kthnx) But now my PC won't start up, it can go on but I only get a black screen, I once got the message ''The overclocking failed, settings reverted to default, press any key to continue'' but my keyboard wouldn't respond. I've tried it a few times more and finally just took all power off, and left it sitting there for 20 minutes or so. I've just shut it back on but it wouldn't do anything. Please I need some help.
Specs if needed:
AMD Athlon 3800+
MSI K9N n570 Force SLI
3GB PC6400 RAM
430 PSU

All help is appreciated.

What were your temps before all these problems? (and I expect you have fried your cpu after the overclock anyways, but you should look into what caused the problem in the first place.)

Go to MSI's website and look up your board, sometimes they have disks you can make that will reset your mother board's BIOS to factory settings, see if that helps. this is assuming you cant of course get in the BIOS yourself and do it with the keyboard. I think you might have a motherboard problem on your hands more than a CPU problem. if you have a friend with a motherboard that is compatible with your CPU take it over there and see if it works, this will help narrow the problem down.

Instead of starting FRAPS you can type "renderer.drawfps 1" in console.

so you tried to clock your CPU from 1Ghz to 70Ghz, GG.

No from 1005 MHZ to 1350. Changed the CPU frequency from 200 to 270.
@ Flaming maniac, I do not know the temps, but I've never had any overheating problems
@ Tesla, I will have a  look into that now, thnx.

Ah ok, but the way you wrote it I thought you did

Hmm, well that overclock shouldn't have killed it because it normally runs at 2.4. Maybe your CPU cooler was a bit loose and the CPU clocked itself back to refrain itself from frieing? Try and get into the BIOS and read the temperatures if you can.

Trying to get into the BIOS is the entire problem. It starts up, CPU swings into full gear, and after some 3 seconds it slows down again leaving me with a blackscreen. Monitor won't respond either, if the screen is one or its getting a signal the light turns green, but it just stays orange. BTW again @  tesla, I've downloaded the file, but the read me said to do nothing if you have no technical experience so I will leave that up to my dad, meanwhile if there are ANY sorts of other ways on getting that piece of junk working again than it appreciated.

easy easy....    i never had such problems, because most cpu/mb are pretty much foolproof.

my advice (usually works for me) in case of emergency, strip computer down to bare essentials. and start tinkering.

hope it works for you to... see you on the bf in 30 minutes

I'd rather not take my PC apart on my own, since I am limited to only a tiny bit of technical expertise. I've read on a forum to take out the mobo battery though. I switched off power, took out power cable, removed battery. Didn't do anything as well.

"since I am limited to only a tiny bit of technical expertise"

you can't see me, but i am shaking my head... no no no...

advice #2:
do as i did... get a friend who knows more than myself... but in your case, get a friend who knows a lot more than you...
good luck.

edit.
PS. computers are not that hard to strip and build. look at what you are doing and thing will work out just fine. it are not 1000pcs jigsaw puzzles. connectors usually fit in one other.
if you sucked in that child's toy, where you fit square triangle and round blocks in through a board... do not attempt to even look inside the computer

Your CPU was propably overheating. Maybe your heatsink's gone bad or came loose.

Since you don't wanna open up your computer, get it to someone who knows what he's doing (computer shop/nerd mate), and tell them that you think it's overheating.

EDIT: And DO IT! Don't turn it on again, if you don't wanna fry your CPU!

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Have you ever opened the case and how long have you had the PC?
You might have a shit load of dust in there.

Ask a friend or maybe your dad (if he knows about PC's) to check your motherboards manual about how to reset BIOS. Most likely with a jumper.

Ya I've opened it enough times, and cleaned it aswell, its an acrilic side window, so once it gets to dusty I will clean it out. Also the CPU is just over a year and a few months old, got it for Christmas '06. I've had my dad have a look at it, but he thinks I fried my CPU, so I've let it sitting there overnight without the power connected. The jumper on the mobo didn't do anything yet, so hopefully it isnt fried

A CPU won't die from a year. I've had mine for over three years, and the CPU in my bed computer is 6 years old. My Linux router's CPU is ten years old.

Your heatsink's simply loose. Everything points to that. At least open up and feel it, to see if it's firmly attached.

It has been fixed again, I don't know how, but my dad messed with it and everything is running again. CPU is running at 2.4 GHZ again and all my RAM is recognised aswell. Thnx for the input to everyone, +1 for you all.
