My laptop's hal.dll got corrupted/missing based on the windows xp screen

so after about a week of looking around, i finally found the xp boot disk.  I searched around google and found some ways to recover it using the recovery console in windows.

But the problem is...the xp disk recognizes the d drive first which screws all the instructions up.  The instructions depend on the disk recognizing the c drive windows installation, typing an admin pass in which allows you to change it.
this link has an example of the screen that you SHOULD get...but the instead of it having "1: C:\Windows" it has "D:\" with something after it

the D drive has the recovery partition which only does a destructive recovery...no help
my windows installation is on the C drive

I've tried using bootcfg, it sees the windows installation there, but it needs the admin pass for me to modify it and I cant get it to pop up

what kind of hard drive is in your laptop?  is it sata or ide?  if it's sata, it will be able to fit in any desktop you have that supports sata.  if it's IDE, you can purchase a little converter thing that makes a standard ide fit a laptop ide.  either way, putting the hard drive into a desktop as a secondary drive would be the easiest way to copy a file onto it.

Ive had this problem before.

Basically, its not really the hal.dll thats the problem (i was able to copy over a hal.dll from the xp cd to the hard drive and still no luck).

Try this:
Recovery console:
fixboot
fixmbr

(Im not sure if those are the exact commands, just google them).

That *should* work. If not do a repair install with the xp cd.

he says he tried the recovery console but the win cd isnt recognizing the c: drive.

i dont exactly want to take my laptop apart...does any1 have any other solutions?

i did that..but you need to get the admin pass to modify the folder

did "expand F(where ever that was) C:/windows" but it required an admin pass to modify
