It'll never happen again. They say that Russian workers at their plants had to work to stop the system from blowing up, whereas most others had to work to stop their system shutting itself down. Which speaks volumes as to how they designed their plants.

Besides, in todays age. Where you have a supercomputer monitoring every single tiny variable from the core temp to the bathroom toilet water level, I don't think you'd ever get another explosion. Worst case scenario would be the system shuts itself down because things were getting 0.5% out of control or something.
Never say never.
Well, the design, now known, was horrible, nothing short of extremely unstable and dangerous, and Chernobyl wasn't quite a horrible freak accident.  Due to the design, it was almost inevitable.

Throw in the intolerance and lack of following safety rules the USSR was known for, now, it makes total sense that it happened.  The sitaution if the USSR properly examined, wouldve been obvious.  Terrible design, an almost impossible to believe number of extreme, easily avoidable blunders,  Chernobyl wasn't at all man's inability to harness nuclear energy.

Now, with the use of nuclear capabilites, while that risk is always present, the experience of Chernobyl, the preventative measures, and the redundancies upon redundancies, It is nearly impossible, at least in the states and europe, where the guidelines are striclty adhered to.

Hell, alot of reactors, are designed around the idea of extreme blunders and human errors.  Most have absolute failsafes, some reactors even cool down when the reactions increase, kinda like suffocating itself.

Actually, worst case scenario is 3 mile island, where it goes bang and nobody notices for years until they happen to stick a probe into the emergency containment building and find it's doing it's job because something's gone bang.

Absolute worst case is the russians drop an ICBM on the place.

To explore Pripyat is on my "to do" list. They give guided tours now, it must be so alien to walk around Pripyat.

I'm wary about a town still crackling with radiation after all that time, so it's not on my to-do list.

I never said I'd live there, but visit and explore Pripyat, yes, it's safe.  you dont wanna drink the water or eat anything,  but just walking around wont irradiate you.
