For those of you that don't already know, Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks of Phoenix have been traded to Miami for Shaq. What do you guys think about it?

Ya I dont get why Phoenix would want Shaq, he is just too old and too out of shape.  Maybe he should have focused more on conditioning in the off season rather than doing tv commercials and shows.

The Suns got rid of great talent and got an old hack.

It just makes it that much easier (and more fulfilling) for the Lakers to beat them in the playoffs.

Well...
I think it will work for both teams.
The suns need to put Amare at 4... he's not meant to play center. Marion was fun... and it will make the suns a worse defensive team... slightly.
Nash and Co. will sill be able to run the full-court offense just fine.
As for the heat... this (and most likely Beasley next year) is the foundation for a championship-caliber team. They just need another big body down low.

I think it was more of a payroll thing, and Marion has wanted out all season (ever since he was talked about being traded for Garnett).

Ya I know Marion wanted out of Phoenix, but I think the Suns could have gotten a little better talent and maybe some youth instead of Shaq

Were they trying to increase or lessen the competition they will provide the Lakers?

Although, as a Lakers fan, I can't complain.

I sort of have mixed feelings myself. I heard rumors late last night about the trade, and thought "never gonna happen". Shaq is too slow, and too old, which will probably just lead to more injuries. Then this afternoon I talked to my mom and she told me about the trade. Naturally, as Shawn Marion is one of my favorite players, I started cursing. Cursed most of the day in fact. Then during the pre-game show some of what they said calmed me down, and I started to get excited. Justing thinking about Shaq dominating San Antonio down low brings a smile to my face. I'm just sad to see Shawn go though.

I disagree! (edit: that it's a bad trade)
It does seem like the suns are getting a worse deal, but honestly, none of them are getting younger, and they can't keep relying on outrunning people. Shaq is still dominant, and having him and Amare on the floor at once will be amazing, not to mention a guy who can get them the ball better than anyone else (Nash) and enough speed to still run the floor (Barbosa and others)
This puts the suns in title contention this year.

I don't know. I'd like to think that Shaq will control the defensive glass enough to bring the Suns out of last place in rebounds and rebounds allowed. I don't think he is going to do anything against Kobe, but he could prove useful against Odom and maybe Bynum. If the Suns can lower their opponents FG percentage and take away more second chance opportunities...who knows what can happen.

That's what I'm thinking. Amare doesn't get to play to his full potential because he wasn't meant to play center and that is the reason he is always in foul trouble. And with Shaq's passing ability he can bring the ball down low and kick out when the double team comes for a wide open 3. I think it also frees up Nash a bit to get more points as well.

LOL

ok heres what your going to see from Shaq that your going to love

hmm... maybe the fact your going to pay him 20 million a year?

48% free throw shooter - check
3 turnovers per game - check
14 pts 8 rebs..... Mark Blount is doing that as his replacent in Miami (except hes scoring more points)
4 fouls per game... so hes spending a lot of time in foul trouble, (didnt he have a streak of consecutive games fouled out?)

The Suns, not the Heat.

J.A. Adande wrote a great article about it for espn.com.  Basically it means the Suns are giving up on the run n gun offense and slowing back down.  They also need someone to go man to man with Duncan in the playoffs.  Shaq gets the ego boost of trying to take Kobe out in the playoffs as well.

They may have to slow down a bit, but not enough to be that big of a difference. If they can get more blocked shots and more rebounds, there is a chance it might even pick up speed from fast breaks. Only now they have to go through someone else on them now that Marion is gone, like Hill maybe even Diaw if he decides he wants to shoot the ball that day. I'd say Barbosa, but I think he needs to pick up his game a bit. I'm not saying he is bad, but still somewhat inexperienced.

I know his free throws are horrible. Hack-A-Shaq anyone? I have a feeling it will improve somewhat. I mean look at Skinner, he was a career 50% from the line, and he is a bit better now. The turnovers aren't that big of a deal, some games even Nash will have more than that. As for his points and rebounds....They aren't bad. Average all the way. Maybe he might feel a sense of purpose now that he is on a team that he wanted to go to and they might increase a little. Hell, he might not even get many points, and I'm fine with that. If his rebounds are good, has a decent number of blocks and assists it might make the difference. And the fouls, well, at least Amare wont have picked up those. And if Shaq does get into foul trouble then Amare can always play center and Diaw can take his place at power forward.

Speaking of Wade and Williams, I'd like to see how Marion is gonna fit in over there. It will sure speed up Miami's game a lot.

How long has shaq been in the NBA? I doubt his free throws will improve any. Meanwhile, Pau Gasol made an amazing debut game with the Lakers. Too bad they lost tonight.
