Odd problem with 8800 series cards and PSUs....

I had the exactly same problem with my Palit 8800GTX and my BeQuiet! Dark Power Pro 750w.... PSU makes that noise when running ATitool and in Crysis menus for example...
I really hope the new GTX I'll get soon doesn't make that noise...

I'm not alone with this problem.. I know many guys who are having this issue...

Please share your thoughts.

"BeQuiet! Dark Power Pro"? More Irony just like dustless chalk (which actually makes worse dust) or zest (which actually leave a filmy residue).

I have had HD 2900pro and HD 3870 and currently a X800XT PE and none of them has caused me this kind of troubles...

I think I've heard my PSU do that noise, but to a much smaller scale and only at specific times. Not during game play from what I've noticed. More or less during programs that give you a score, ex) 3DMark...

I've got a 520W PSU (Noname) and an nVidia 6600 AGP in a computer, that happens sometimes on low framerates. Usually between 15 and 20FPS, it makes a Trrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee noise.

Strange.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. Did you check the amps on the 12v rail(s). I can see that happening under load if you don't have enough amps running to the video card.

20A /rail and two rails going to GFX card. Definately enought.... I just got the new Asus 8800 GTX and it is much more quieter than the old Palit.... fan speed stays on normal and idle temps 65c and load temps at 85c (15c lower load and 10c lower load than the crap Palit card that had fan at 100%).
Also the weird sound still exists but now it is not so loud as it was with the Palit.
I have no idea about this problem.... sounds very interesting...

edit: actually the temps shown by ntune and atitool were 7c higher than real temps... GPU-Z reports the correct temps and it idles at 60c.

@ topic: That is strange. However, it might just be the little extra power that the gfx card is drawing from the PSU that makes the pwm-fan go crazy.

I just tried playing Crysis.... It made funny sounds in the menu but in-game it was quiet (only the normal and pretty silent fan noise). And it was very smooth on high settings and looked great.

bad ball bearing in a fan? or is a fan hitting a wire in the case somewhere. I've had that happen to me.

nah... it can't explain it because it doesn't make that sound all the time. and I didn't have problems with different gfx cards...

edit: btw the sound is like uuuuiiiiiiiiuuuuuuiiiiiuuuuiiiii which is not like some wire hitting a fan....
