Well, if I can get out of my driveway I can get around town if I had to.  But out of town, no way I'm venturing out there.  If you get stuck, you'll be there til they find you the next day.

Yeah here in southern wisconsin we hardly EVER get snow days for school . . . We've had 3 in the past 3 weeks and tomarrow is looking like a delay. Only bad thing about that is all of this will run over into summer :

Had to shovel 2-3 foot drifts out of my whole driveway and sidewalk ... took 2 hours.  Last night nearly 800 vehicles were stranded overnight.

http://wkow.madison.com/News/index.php?ID=18757

National Guard troops on snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles checked on the stranded motorists through the night and delivered fuel, food, water and blankets.  Lieutenant Colonel Tim Donovan said Thursday only minor medical conditions were reported.  Donovan went up in a National Guard helicopter Thursday morning to get an aerial view of the situation.  The backup started when some semitrailer trucks lost traction and got stuck on a small hill. That caused a backup that stretched 19 miles.

The State Patrol has brought in extra troopers to help deal with major blockages on the Interstate south of the Beltline due to slide offs and all of the snow. They are traveling via snowmobile to check on people stuck in their cars, waiting to move.

40 Wisconsin National Guard troops have been mobilized to assist stranded motorists and will deliver food and water to affected citizens. The National Guard is using 15 Humvees and two 5-ton trucks to assist, and two National Guard Black Hawk helicopters are also being readied in the event that aerial search and surveillance is required. The Wisconsin National Guard Armory in Janesville is also being readied for use as a possible shelter location if needed.

Troopers from Rock County have been called in and are working their way north on the interstate to help out.  Troopers are also working with DNR wardens driving heavy duty four wheel drive vehicles to get to cars that have slid off or were involved in accidents.  While a lot of cars are stuck in traffic, the interstate is officially open, and no one is expected to be stranded tonight.  The State Patrol does advise, however, that you not travel in the area at all.  People affected have accommodations set-up at two hotels on Highway 59 near Edgerton.

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is recommending no travel on area roads. Road conditions are deteriorating with whiteout conditions at times, icy roads and blowing and drifting snow.  Deputies have responded to numerous slide-offs and crashes Wednesday, and are asking drivers to restrict their travel if at all possible. If you must travel, be prepared for extremely treacherous conditions. Drive slowly and allow ample time to reach your destination. Have a winter survival kit in your vehicle, including a fully charged cell phone. Keep your gas tank full and always wear your seatbelt. If you should become stranded, stay in your vehicle and call 911.  Public safety services performed by the Dane County Sheriff’s Department, the Dane County Highway Department, and the 911 center will NOT be affected by the closure. Sheriff’s deputies will continue patrols and snow-plowing crews will continue efforts to clear highways and roads.

Snow emergencies are in effect in Beloit, Deerfield, Ft. Atkinson, Marshall, McFarland, Mt. Horeb, Janesville, Lodi, Oregon and Portage and Sun Prairie. Drivers are asked to remove their cars from the streets overnight.

Yeah, tell me about it...this is the kind of weather that plays hell on people, particularly kids.  I mean, you dress them for the cold morning, and by noon its 40deg warmer than it was, or you expect a fairly warm day, and the sun doesnt come out and its 10 deg cooler than predicted.

have I said winter sucks yet?

I officially hate snow. Every muscle in my body hurts after shoveling all that snow.  I have never seen this much snow in 28 years of living in the Midwest.

Strangely here in Ireland you barely needed a coat today. This has been one of our mildest winters ever.
