The Space Shuttle Atlantis blasted off today after a two month delay on her mission to deliver the lab Columbus to the International Space Station.
It is the:
* 152nd manned US space launch.
* 121st space shuttle flight since STS-1.
* 96th post-Challenger mission.
* 8th post-Columbia mission.
* 8th visit to the International Space Station for Atlantis.

I'm also about 30 minutes from Kennedy Space Center. What school do you go to? I attend Satellite High. The launch was pretty, but they get boring once you've seen dozens of them.

Too cloudy for me to see it... They almost didn't launch. One of these days I'll get a good shot of it... to post for you guys . Last time I filmed i coming in.

Every once in a while when the shuttle lands at Edwards I can see it from here with no help (naked eye). It's a pretty awesome sight combined with the powerful thought of space exploration.

Not a problem. As a result from Columbia they made several changes.

1. Chunk off of Fuel Tank in itself is not a problem. The fuel tank (Orange) is ejected after a few minutes and I believe burns up re-entering atmosphere. The two white rockets that come off are recovered in the ocean.

2. It would have to strike the underside of the shuttle, which is its heatshield. NASA has made changes to both harden the underside and make the foam a lot less destructive.

3. The shuttle possesses the ability to repair its heatshield in orbit now, one of the results of the Columbia Disaster.

Twenty-three years in the making, Columbus is the European Space Agency's primary contribution to the space station. The lab has endured space station redesigns and slowdowns, as well as a number of shuttle postponements and two shuttle accidents.

"We're all as excited as heck," said an emotional Alan Thirkettle, Europe's space station program manager. "I've lost about 500 grams (about 1 pound) so far, and that's just been tears."
