Yes, AA was never effective.
Cbass, try this. When in AA, static or mobile, get a lock on a plane. Wait for them to drop flares. Only fire missiles if they are moving in a direct line towards or away from you. If your line of fire is perpendicular to their flight path, you will miss, at least in 1.12. If you need time to lock after they drop flares, do this... aim higher than the plane so once they drop flares, the only target inside your little circle of valid targets is the plane. That way, when the flares go, you lose lock, but immediately start regaining lock on the jet, not the flares. This way you will get the fastest lock possible and can fire off your missiles before they leave range. If you let the flares distract your targetting for the entire time they are falling out of your line of fire, then of course you won't get a shot off. If you eliminate the flares as possible targets, you will immediately reaquire the jet.

Now that's a WOO-AH attitude. Either you never had a skilled AA ground pooper take a good shot at your plane, or the AA just really did suck. At any rate I applaud your attitude to the current situation.mecspecialist wrote:
Great patch! I love it.
Now the AAs are a real competition and those bombing runs are even more thrilling.
I was a good jet-player before patch 1.2 and after i will be an even better one. Made already lots of rounds and yes, now i get in trouble or shot down, too. But that's just fair.
Prior patch 1.2 there was simply no real competition towards TV-guided-missiles and my 5 bombs. Now the ground-poopers have at least a chance - well done EA.
So stop whining you retarded wanna-be-pilots about the new strength of AA and compete with it or get OUT!

No Dolphin Diving, Bunnys, NoobTubers! I Completely OWN now! I dindnt realize until this patch how much I was getting killed from the exploitive BS. With the new patch changes I just run around crushing peoples faces.
PKM is stronger but is Balanced by stronger snipers to shoot the little proned mgs in the face. choppers get ripped down by AKs all the time in real life. A Missile is a MISSILE, its a GIANT BOMB THAT BLOWS SHIT UP! ITS A MISSILE! it should be nasty ITS A MISSILE!
And God Help You tank whores, all I do is stomp around with the Anti Tank kit and its even nastier now.
Overall I'd say the patch is a good improvement, it makes it harder for all the kids that played the game like total Fags.
Gives the Legit a chance to Shine!

LMAO, nice.
KJ, to be honest, AA WASN'T a "real" threat prior patch 1.2. If you'll take a closer look into jet-top-charts and work through most jet-whores-stats then you get the clue. Flying a J-10 and raping 10.000s of willing infantery-points, strafing MG-fire on airfields and spawn points - lol, simply lame ass tactics, but easy points and lots of badges and gold-medals. All AA-sites on all maps are well known and were no real threat due to malefunctioning AA, just a sudden grave for the infanterist, most time.Kung Jew wrote:

Yes, prior 1.2 some shots of staionary-AA hit, some nailed me with mobile-AA down, but those things happened just few times.
The truth is: Which jet-whore did really care about those few 'death' with that superiour ratio of 40 kills : 0/1/2 death, or even more? Right - nobody Stuff got really boring recently!
Now things ROCK again! For me as pilot AND for the ground-troopers as well. Hurray - now air-strikes should go to deserve that name . Whether jet-whore or not, now BF2 is more balanced between air-/ground-troops. The new strength of stat. and mobile AA is giving me, personally an even better and extra kick. As BF2-pilot i've got nervous fingers again when getting an AA-warning NOW!
I take back everything I said in this thread.

I agree that AA should be a threat to aircraft, but it should also take at least a modicum of skill to use effectively. As it stands now, after the patch, all you have to do is wait for the tone and click, and your missiles will make 90 degree turns to hit their target. And in some cases will make 180s after missing and still hit their target.
And as I said before, choppers are the real victims in this patch; at least jets can fly out of range in 5 seconds.

There's no skill to it. You point, get a lock, shoot. How would that take skill? There's nothing more you can do.Skruples wrote:

The complete opposite of 1.12, where missiles would go to great lengths to miss the enemy target (one time a missile did an extremely tight loop about a millisecond before hitting a chopper, deciding instead to go after the flares that he had just released. Seriously, the loop was about 5 feet in diameter. God damn I wish I hadn't deleted that fraps).Skruples wrote:

Anyway, I don't see why it should take much more than a lock-on considering you guys don't even need to hit anywhere close to your targets to kill them.
Getting a nice k/d with jets isn't (wasn't) hard, but skill certainly helped. It's the same now for AA; the learning curve is relativley small but you can get better with more skillz.
Theres only one thing you should be doing than sitting here whinging (Even though its most likely letting alot of steam venting and stopping you all snapping and going on a rampage lol) and thats playing the friggin game and do one thing i always have tried to do and thats have FUN in about a months time they will release another patch that will screw everything up again so why bother but in the meantime do like they do in the real boys army ADAPT AND SURVIVE boys theres always a way

I realised that 3 AA shots is required to destroy a plane though.General_CoLin_Tassi wrote:
I agree with the AA inprovement. Its the attack heli's TV range reduction, 14 to 8 missiles, hit point reduction aswell as the AA improvement. That the problem. A good patch would be 8 missiles, a hit point reduction of between this new patch setting and the original setting. Keep TV's as they were as this will counter the new uber AA. Also jets hit points should be increased slighty as the AA is deadly.
Depends where they hit you.Ayumiz wrote:

I took 3 AA rockets to my Cobra the other day on Wake, and I still had 5 bars left.
The skill involved is knowing when to shoot. If you ever used AA in the pre-AA ownage days, you'd know that waiting for a lock and firing was never enough. Someone wrote a nice long thread on how to use AA effectively in the featured post section.CrazeD wrote:

Now, all you have to do is click when you hear the beep. Really. They can be traveling perpendicular to your position at mach one at a distance of 50 feet, and the missile will still turn 90 degrees in a fraction of a second and blow them away.
torin, my problem with the "go fly yourself and stop whining" - argument is that even on a 64-player-server, there will be only 2 jets for 32 people. What are those other 30 guys to do when the jets are taken ? some of us will have to be on the ground, capping flags.
Hell, if I tried to get into a jet lately, there is a good chance I was going to be sniped right out of the cockpit or TK'ed before I even made it to the plane.
jets were so powerful and impossible to fight from the ground at the same time, that on any given night on a wake server, 90% of team members would rather camp the carrier and wait for the jet to respawn instead of trying to cap a flag on the island.
Moreover, teamplay on most public servers will be so bad, that I will have no way to communicate with the pilots on my team to ask for air support. In 80-90% of the games I have been in, our pilots were busy doing bombings runs on the enemy uncap or attacking SP's to raise their personal score instead of trying to keep the enemy jets of our back while we were down on the ground, screaming for air support.
So yes, I am glad I at least have a means to keep the jets at bay myself now, if our pilots should decide they are not gonna help us out.
I agree that BF2 has incredible depth and huge tactical implications, but the prerequisite for that is always teamplay. Like you said, every unit on the battlefield is important, you won't win a map only with planes or only with infantry.
I played about two hours of wake last night and even with the new AA, the jets were still owning everything. Which is fine, btw, jets are at the top of the food chain in BF2, with armor coming in second and infantry right down at the bottom. I don't mind that. It is a realistic approach from a game design POV.
What I do mind though is that us infantry guys should have no valuable means to fight enemy jets at all. that was the case in 1.12, and now it isn't any more.
I guess most of the good pilots here will accept the changes as what they are, a challenge.
they will adapt and learn to fight the AA before they do anything else, which btw is what real air forces also do, eliminating enemy AA installations before commencing ground attacks. nothing special here.
and maybe, just maybe, this patch will improve teamplay a little, with pilots asking for ground support against AA in exchange for air suppot against armor. would that be so bad ?
example of premier teamplay:
SL:"hey, pilot dude, we have an enemy tank on the bridge at the northern base and need air support"
Pilot: "Roger that, commencing attack, hold your squad until bombs have dropped. Could you take care of the AA before I come in ?"
SL: "absolutely. I'll tell my sniper to keep it clean"
oh boy, how I would love to have a conversation like that at some point...

Wow B.Schuss, that is exactly what I've been trying to convey, but in lest dramatic and professional fashion. YOu actually have to play with one another not be a selfish point whore.
Not swinging on the teabags, but it's true that you have to involve teamwork to get out of the Essex. Flame....on!
