My ping is like in the 500's even in servers in the Central Valley (my area). It has happend to my brother too as he will get the same type of ping. Were not playing at the same time, not downloading anything, FireWall off, Internet connection is superb. WTF?

I can't even get into bf2 after the patch because of my shitty graphics card. Hopefully they fix it. It's totally ridiculous how much problems this patch has brought up.

its not problem of GFX card or problem of bandwith or your location. It is problem of 1.2 that many ppl are encountering atm. I had to stop playing yesterday as lag was unbearable.
so im now trying to figure out if it can be related to official/unofficial 1.2 version...

i patched and had no problem however that's not the case with my friend. he's running 1.5GB memory, ATI 256MB AGP card(he's set everything to low) and 2.8GHZ P4 HT. before the patch he was running great and now it's unplayable. his lag is horrible, 150-250 on servers he used to be 30-45ms. it's not his connection because when he pings the servers via command prompt he gets the ping he should have. he checked his UL/DL speeds and they're as good as they can be for comcast. his system is running very lean with out any extra programs that could interfere with BF2(AV,Firewall,etc).
when he plays now at the lowest settings he gets around 15FPS, when he looks at the sky it still at 15FPS instead of jumping up. he's re-installed twice and re-patched from clean installs, still doesn't work. i can't figure it out for the life of me and was hoping someone had some insight.
i forgot to add that he downloaded it directly from EA too.

Yeah I think it is the patch. Before 1.03 people had their graphics settings on high, but after patching 1.03 they had to reduce their settings to medium due to lag. I remember reading complaints from people on this forum during that time.
Now that 1.2 has come out the people that had their settings on medium are having to reduce their settings to low, and those that had their settings already on low aren't able to enter the game to play anymore or are having graphical issues. So with each new patch there is a degradation of performance.

I'm getting an unstable ping since the patch as well. My ping in the normal servers I play in are still an average of about 20 to 30, but they fluctuate quite often and jump up to the 4 and 5 hundreds. First game I got in with the patch I noticed my graphics were horrible. Even though my settings claimed to be maxed in the options, it looked lowest in game. Set everything to low, loaded a map, quit, then reset everything to max and fixed that minor problem. Lag is still an issue though.

the real strange thing is that i've got almost the same system as him, the only difference is i've got dual AMDs and 1GB of memory instead of 1.5, and i run BF2 fine after patching to 1.2. actually, i bumped up my video settings and it's not lagging at all.
my friend actually called EA tech support out of desperation and they just said to re-install and power cycle his cable modem. we already did this and of course it didn't work.

I turned ligthing to medium and antialias OFF and it started to work OK now (have NVIDIA 6800GT)

To do this by using the task manager, select the Process Tab and searching for the BF2.exe process, right-click it and select 'Set Affinity ...' there deselect every checkbox except of the first CPU, CPU 0 and click 'OK'.
Also please try deleting the My Documents\Battlefield 2 folder and try again. If you have punkbuster, please update it by going to evenbalance.com. Please make sure that you have closed any programs or tasks running in the background as sometimes one of the programs can conflict with the game. Background applications such as anti-virus programs are often the cause of conflicts.
· Hold down the Ctrl, Alt, and Delete keys at the same time
· Click the "Processes" tab.
· Click on the gray bar in the middle column that says User Name to sort by user name.

I had a similar problem with one server. I switched to another and everthing went back to normal. I think it was the servers problem because I wasn't the only one with high numbers. It is my favorite server but I just can't play on it lately with the lag. I chalk it up to a POS server problem.
