Well, I happen to consume banana's from Wegman's that this incident occurred during. I was wondering if there were any long-term effects from Hepatitis A. The ONLY possible symptoms I've shown were that I had experienced excessive tiredness 3 days in a row last week. Nothing else. BTW, I HATE getting shots.

"Thousands turned out to be vaccinated for Hepatitis A Saturday during free clinics offered by the Erie County Health Department. The clinics came in response to Friday's announcement that a produce employee at the Wegmans on Sheridan Drive in Williamsville tested positive for Hepatitis A.

"The exposure for individuals...is low risk. It's not no-risk," said Erie County Health Commissioner Doctor Anthony Billattier. "That's why we roll this out because we can't tell people they won't get Hepatitis A."

Saturday's clinic ran from 4 p.m. to midnight in the cafeteria of Building S at Erie Community College where 2,000 to 2,400 were in attendance. Another clinic is being offered at the same location Sunday from noon to 8 p.m.

By the time the doors opened Saturday afternoon, hundreds were already in line for the free shots.

"Exposure seems pretty unlikely but we figured since they were offering it, why not?" said Dave Januchowski.

He was in line nearly two hours before the doors opened and had a relatively short wait. Others waited outside in the cold for as long as two hours before buses were brought in to offer some protection from the elements.

"This is probably the biggest test (of our emergency preparedness) where we have actual patients in a clinic," Dr. Billattier said of Erie County's response.

Health officials continued to stress that the incident is not an outbreak, but consists of just one person who tested positive at the one Wegmans location. The issue is of concern, though, because the person worked in the produce department and customers likely consumed the raw fruits and vegetables. Cooked food and produce in wrapped packages or sealed bags is not a threat.

The risk dates back to January 7th. Anyone who has bought produce since then should stay alert for signs of the illness which include: jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhea, and fever. Customers who experience those symptoms should contact their doctor, but should also know that it may take two months for symptoms to appear.

At the same time, it is recommended that anyone who purchased and ate raw produce from this location since January 26th be vaccinated for Hepatitis A.

Wegmans' spokesperson, Ann McCarthy said Wegmans has not been asked to close. Instead, they are in the process of sanitizing their store and educating their employees about Hepatitis A.

She said customers should not attempt to return potentially contaminated produce, but should instead discard it at home. Customers wishing to receive a refund can bring in their receipt.

Erie County Executive Chris Collins announced Sunday afternoon that there will be an additional Hepatitis A Vaccine Clinic held Monday February 11, 2008 at the Erie Community College North Campus between the hours of 12:00 noon - 8:00 PM for those individuals who may not have had the opportunity to receive the vaccination.

Erie County Executive Collins stated, "After discussions with members of my public health and emergency management teams, it was decided that the need existed to extend the vaccination program for at least one additional day. We will be meeting and evaluating progress throughout the day, and if the need arises, more dates may be announced.""

Just go get the shot..

I got both my A and B shots in school.. they aren't that bad.. Sore arm for a few hours and your good..

But it's also very unlikely that you contracted Hep A from someone who worked at the store..

Early symptoms of hepatitis A infection can be mistaken for influenza, but some sufferers, especially children, exhibit no symptoms at all. Symptoms typically appear 2 to 6 weeks, (the incubation period ), after the intial infection.

Symptoms can return over the following 6-9 months which include:

    * Fatigue
    * Fever
    * Abdominal pain
    * Nausea
    * Diarrhea
    * Appetite loss
    * Depression
    * Jaundice, a yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes
    * Sharp pains in the right-upper quadrant of the abdomen
    * Weight loss
Nothing permanent I don't think. If you are really concerned, just get the shot and you will be immune.

Just get the shot, it won't be bad if you don't think about you hating it, or the "pain" it causes. Just close your eyes and you can't feel a thing.
