I'm a nublet when it comes to components, but I try to hold my own. Raise your hands everyone who have decided to upgrade their PC:s, only to notice that your obsolete system needs more part replacement than an '86 Fiat Uno?

Basically, my system has been gone through, well.. .."some" changes since the original 800Mhz Socket A Duron (Or was it 850?). The only thing that's original is the case and floppy-drive. Yes, I've had it since 2001. Whoop-de-doo. Now I know that many of you out here in the Tech section are currently laughing your asses off at my poopy system, but I have no intention of building an über-rig, nor have I ever planned to do so.

My rant goes out to component manufacturers and dealers.

So, a long time ago, i switched my mobo. Thinking I was really smart, I got the AsRock Dual SATA motherboard s939 with both AGP and PCI-e-slots. It also has a fancy-schmansy "Future CPU-port", basically for the AM2 which hadn't come out at the time of my purchase. So it was the most super amazing megabargain that I thought could be possible. Lucky me, don't you agree?

No.

2 years later, I'm facing the task of upgrading again. Yes, I want to keep the rig functional and no, I have no intention to ever make a supacomputa out of it. Just keep it working. Now, I know that two years in terms of components is like trying to fit the wooden wheels of an amish-carriage onto a Bugatti Veyron, but according to what the geeks told me at the store, it should be possible, right? I mean I did get a 1.8Ghz Duron for the old socket-A mobo 4 years after the socket-type came out. So I should easily get new party-parts for this one in terms of performance-boosting.

Let's see now.. I need a faster processor, so why not go for a 4200+ X2? Oh, I can't find any. Replaced by AM2, you say? The fastest one I managed to find was a 3200+, which I already have. Thanks a fucking million, AMD!

Oh wait, the "future CPU-port"! That'll do it!

So I look on the pages of the component dealer who sold me the original mobo to see how much the add-on card will cost, only to see that they don't have it. So they campaign to me that I'll get the most upgradable piece of hardware known to man, then they don't deliver the upgrades? Nice short-term planning, assholes. Maybe they should implement some Soviet tactics in their sales strategy.

So the only thing I can upgrade, is the Graphcard. Only that, why do it when the rest of the system is going to bottleneck anyway?

Thanks AMD! Thanks component dealers! Thanks AsRock!

Maybe I should just go to a store and get myself a generic HP piece of shit.
I need around tree fiddy.

So, you're blaming component makers for advancing technology?

Yeah, because that's logical an all...

Components are constantly changing, upgrading, and becoming incompatible with older systems. That's how it works. If you don't like it....well, that sucks.

Or you could build a AMD 4200+ X2 system with 2 gig 6400 RAM, Geforce 7600 gs, Case, HD, and DVD burner for under $300 US.

You can find a Socket 939 Dual core on Ebay.

I'm not blaming component manufacturers for advancing technology, but rather blaming them for not keeping an at least small availability of a bit "aged" components, such as the X2. Moreso, I'm blaming component distributors in Finland for not being able to get me the mobo-upgrade needed for AM2. Note that I bought my motherboard with the knowledge of your stated fact, that technology in fact does advance.

Hell, I'm all for rapid advanced in technology, but I might not be up for changing everything yet again.

I know that's the way it works. What I'm saying is that it shouldn't have to. The market could always be a bit more consumer friendly.

Don't get sucked in an upgrade rut. You ruin what little antique value a computer has by coughing up a new part only to be bottlenecked by the rest of your rig. You're far better off scratching your mobo, CPU, memory and video card (think of these as you would a single component and you'll be happier) for fresh replacements every three to four years than you are piece-mealing older components (half of which are probably overpriced due to low availability) together. You might spend a bit more money, but the performance gain and frustration alleviation will more than pay for itself in the long run.

Other upgrades run in the realm of new power supplies (grab a PSU tester to run periodically and replace your unit if anything reads significantly under or over volt; tutorials via google) and large-capacity hard drives.

this is why I make all my own parts from scratch.

You just need some Flour, some yeast, and some paprika.

I'm not getting anything off Ebay. As for the local Finnish Ebay (huuto.net), I have yet to see anything that I want to get. Since I'm currently running a 3200+, I can't be bothered to replace it with a 3500+, but rather a 4200+ X2, of which there is 1 (one) currently up for bidding. I'll see how it goes, but I'd rather follow these easy steps:

1. Purchase component from store
2. Go home with said component
3. Replace old component with new component
4.
5. Profit

I would love to too. But considering you can't, it is your only option.

You might want to consider Opterons as well, like the Opteron 165 or 170. They overclock better and have more cache than a X2.

Starmicro hasn't got very good reviews for customer service and shipping in other sites I've seen.

Decent ratings on Pricewatch.com though, and the build option is from newegg.

AMD ditching the socket 939 platform so hastily really pissed off a lot of people.  Including me.  I'm too cheap to upgrade to a new motherboard, RAM, and CPU when I want to add some performance to my system.  Although, I will need to buy a new video card soon.  The fans on mine are making way too much noise for me to put up with it.

I know...I really didn't want to have to Ebay it, but I need my Socket 939 to last to 2012 for office use/web surfing, and a dual core would make it bearable.

Yep.  I had a 3000+ until last January, when I bought a 4800+ X2 right before they became impossible to find from a reputable retailer.  I doubt I will upgrade anything except storage and a videocard for the life of this computer.

January 08? Or 07?

And off-topic, but can you tell me whether an Ebay seller has the right to withhold a sale if they feel they did not receive enough for it?

Hey Don... I'll try to look for a socket 939 Athlon X2 for you. I know a good place where to get hardware. I just bought a 4200+ X2 for my friend there. Much better than huuto.net

January 07.  I probably should have specified that.

eBay related:  And unless there was a reserve price, the auction is a binding contract at whatever price it was at when it ended.  The seller can cancel it early, of course, but that is a bit different.  Most of the bidding on items is in the last hour, so if they pull the plug on it, they could lose out.
