I saw a national poll recently indicating that McCain is more likely to win if running against Hillary, and more likely to lose if running against Obama.

The problem is, if neither of the two democrats gets enough delegates to have a majority for the convention, the decision on who is going to be the democratic nominee will most likely be made by party officials behind closed doors, and Obama is screwed then. Hillary is much better connected to the powerful party members, and has much bigger support among them.

At least that's what the german media is saying.

Which is why when it comes time to actually vote im going to switch back to Independant

If you are registerered as a Republican you cannot switch to Democrat during the Caucas, I didnt know this, but it makes sense. A few people got turned away from the Caucas because they didnt know that either.
They have different rules in each state for voting in the primaries also. Some allow you to vote cross party. Some States are winner take all (instead of proportional allocation... etc.). That's why the primaries are somewhat unpredictable. There are lots of different scenarios involved.

The party leaders wouldn't have as much power. Stripping Florida and Maine of their delegates, and insider "super delegates" help to promote the idea of selected, not elected.
