A friend of mine died in Iraq.

He was inside an APC, with other soldiers on board.  They began to travel across a bridge over a river.  Unknown to them, there was an IED on that bridge.  Once they moved onto the bridge, the IED detonated, and the APC tumbled into the river below.  He managed to escape the wreckage, but there were still soldiers trapped inside.  He risked his life to pull the soldiers out from the APC, while chunks of debris from the bridge are falling on and around him.  He was able to save three soldiers from the wreckage.  But he was badly, badly injured himself.  He was rushed off to the nearest medical base, where he was listed as in critical condition for a long time.

Months later, he succumbed to his injuries.

He leaves behind a wife, and 2 children.

Rest in peace, old friend.

could we not cheapen this mans actions by adding silly posts.  The man is a hero.  I dont think anything more could be said respectfully in this time of mourning.  Take comfort in knowing that I know exactly how you feel.

Sorry to hear that.

I was going to post a topic like this earlier.

My family and I lost a friend the 16th of January, 2006. He was flying an apache along side another one and an insurgent shot his Apache down with a SAM. I remember when we use to go over to his house and look through his big telescope he had. We would go look at his pond he had and feed the fish and stuff like that. He had a daughter and a wife. My dad almost died, he was flying along side another Apache when the other Apache he was flying next to got shot down. Bad memories.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Rex “Chris” Kenyon lived to fly.

He remained in his theater seat for a second showing of the movie “Top Gun” and took his first helicopter flight when he was still a student at El Segundo High School.

As an Army chief warrant officer, he was amazed that he got paid to fly helicopters.

“He used to say, ‘Where else can you work where they give you a $30 million helicopter, all the gas you wanted and all you have to do is fly around?” said his father, Rex Kenyon.

The younger Kenyon, 34, was killed Jan. 16 along with another pilot when their Apache helicopter was shot down during an aerial patrol north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 4th Aviation Regiment (Attack), Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Hood, Texas.

During a conversation with his father the night before he died, Kenyon talked about the positive difference he thought he was making in Iraq.

“One of the things he told us was that when he was flying, you could see the kids walking to school and playing soccer and people getting their lives back together,” his father said.

Flags in the state capitol will fly at half staff in Kenyon’s honor.

“His heroic service and selfless sacrifice for his country will not be forgotten,” Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said in a statement.

Kenyon is survived by his parents, his wife and a 5-year-old daughter. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday.

That man had the balls to do something only 6% of the entire world would do.
Also for the Apache crew God bless them.

Echo what ATG said...I am grateful that brave men and women put themselves in harm's way so that my family and I do not have to. It's a debt without measure that I will never forget. God bless.

He chose a path many do not.
He acted when many would not.

this is the ANZAC (Australian New Zealand Army Corps)ode

i think it is fitting

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
