I'll be in the area this summer. Any advice not to do?
Hmm, what not to do.
1. Don't expect to be able to buy a mixed drink unless you are in a restaurant and being served dinner, want to buy a membership to a private club, or go to one of the state run liquor stores and buy your own booze; brown bagging is not legal. We do have open bars, but they are only allowed to serve beer, and in Utah that beer is limited to 3.2% alcohol; stronger beers can be had at the same places where you can get mixed drinks.
2. Don't expect much in the way of mass transit. Utah is only now beginning to expand its mass transit beyond basic bus service, and even the bus service is poor at best. We have taxis, but they aren't plentiful. You will usually have to call one if you want one, as you won't be able to just flag one down. Be prepared to rent a car if you really want to get around.
3. If you come during the summer, don't expect any reprieve from the heat. During a normal year we have about 300 days of sun, and the summers are quite hot. The only saving grace is that it's a dry heat.
4. If you don't like Mexican food, you might be in trouble, as every non-Mexican restaurant that closes is replaced with one.
5. Whatever you do, DO NOT let the missionaries corner you.
