Yes, it is the difference between Standard def and most HD broadcast.
Do you know what the native resolution is on it? You could be losing 1/2 the detail of full 1080p
You will not get a true 1080p signal from a broadcast. Not in the foreseeable future at least. Bandwidth is an issue.

No but if the plasma is native 1024x768 the 1920x1080 needs to be downscaled to the native resolution losing 1/2 the detail of 1920x1080

Native resolution ¹ Commonly called ² Meets definition of high-def? ³ Frequency Typical TV types
1,920x1,080 1080p Yes Rare but getting more common especially in larger TVs Flat-panel LCD; DLP, LCD, and LCoS projection; very high-end plasma
1,366x768 768p Yes Very common in all screen sizes Flat-panel LCD; 50-inch plasma
1,280x720 720p Yes Common in rear-projection but not flat-panels DLP, LCD, and LCoS projection
1,024x768 HDTV plasma Yes The most common plasma resolution 37- and 42-inch plasma
852x480 EDTV plasma No Increasingly rare 37- and 42-inch plasma
640x480 VGA No Increasingly rare Small LCD TVs

I'm pretty sure it's this one: http://www.pioneer.no/no/products/archi … index.html

That looks to be 720p so you should get a good picture and depending on viewing distance it's debatable how much 1080 would benefit the picture.

What’s Behind Warner’s Blu-ray Switch
Don Lindich, writer for the Pittsburgh Post and outspoken HD DVD supporter, claims that he knows the reason why Warner dropped HD DVD support. The motive? A failed alliance with Fox and a cold hard cash offer of $500 million from the Blu-ray team.

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08012/848675-96.stm

Warner gave Toshiba an opportunity to lure a Blu-ray studio to HD DVD, in which case they would go HD DVD exclusive and give HD DVD a clear studio advantage. A deal was nearly secured with Fox, which had been having trouble with Blu-ray disc production due to the lack of manufacturing infrastructure. At the 11th hour, Fox went to Sony with its concerns and received a reported $120 million payout to stay with Blu-ray. With no studio joining them on the HD DVD side, Warner's hand was forced and it went with Blu-ray, receiving a reported $500 million for doing so.

For awhile, the video stores had a larger selection of HD-DVD than Blu-Ray. Then it became balanced around when they got rid of their last VHS's. Now I see a mere handful of HD-DVD's and four shelf-fulls of Blu-Rays at the local Hollywood Video. As soon as media manufacturing costs go down, so will the prices, and that will be the time when I make a switch, but only when I have an HD viewer.

Not HD = 576p
HD ready = 720p
Full HD = 1080i - where the i stands for interlaced so actually not 1080 at all but it snares you to think it is and it does just that very well
True HD = 1080p - correct me if i'm wrong but i think only two of the latest Pioneer screens have this

There are plenty of 1080p panels about now.

Looks like Toshiba are fighting the war by reducing the cost of players (Already done in the US) and better advertising. HD DVD player for the price of a good upscaling DVD player.

Never heard of True HD. Usually there is no term for 1080i (or it goes under HD ready) and Full HD is 1080p.

It's all silly marketing terms anyway.

And pr0n won't matter as much as back in the tape days as there's something called the internet now.

I got this explained from a guy i trust when it comes to tech definitions in the hifi genre, silly terms perhaps but when you decide to invest quite heavily in the hifi market its good to know what you are buying and if the tech you buy will last for awhile

I believe that Full HD is also refered to as ultra-HD, true-HD and 1080p.

@gvers, yeah Toshiba have a range of HD DVD players that are really good. Got one discounted with my HDTV and has done me proud.

I've noticed that the price of HDDVD players are dropping, might be because of the possible scenario of the format being extinct soon ...
if you are in the market ofr a HDDVD or Blu-Ray i would wait just a tad longer for this issue to be resolved ...

I have a 37" 720p HDTV, and my parents have a 42" 1080p, and I really can't tell much difference between the resolution on the two. One time I had a bunch of friends over, and we had two 360's going, and the one on my parents, in 1080p with an HDMI cable was not that much better than my TV with Components.

As for next gen DVD's, my brother has a PS3, but my parents wont let him use it on their TV, and I won't let him use mine, so he uses a 27" CRT TV, which completely defeats the purpose of the blu-ray player, which makes me lol. Some times he brings it up to the living room, but its such a hassle to get the HDMI cable from the TV to the PS3 that he doesn't do it very often.

If the prices do drop as they have in the US you would be paying the same for a HD DVD player (also one of the best upscaling DVD players) for the same price as an upscaling dvd player. If they keep the 2 free films and 5 more by mail in rebate going i'll be getting one to go with my PS3 for Blu Ray (until profile 2 players exist at a reasonable price). It appears Toshiba are now going to fight the war on price and getting the players out to joe public is what really counts.

Nope.

HD Ready applies to any HD capable display. The ready aspect comes from the fact that these devices do not have HD tuners and can only display an HD picture when connected to an external HD source.

Full HD = 1080p.

No such thing as true HD.

I read that Blu-ray has outsold HDDVD 2:1.

Also, The XBox360 is probably getting a Blu-ray player (like the HDDVD player they already have.
Thats good news, I "aqcuired" the HD DVD player for sexbox, but not much point.  Not enough stuff to warrant paying the £120 for it.  If Blu-Ray is going to win, it should get a move on and stop sitting on the fence.
