Or hums, or rings, or whatever you want to call it. Whenever my monitor is on, it emits a very high-pitched sound. It varies in volume from one day to the next. Usually it's hard to hear, but it's still really starting to get on my nerves. Plus, I fear it may be a sign of an early death for my monitor.

It's a Samsung 940bw. The ringing only happens when the screen is displaying something, so if it goes into standby mode the ringing stops.

So yeah, how do i fix it? what's causing it?

Most likely it is being caused by a small loose part that is vibrating because of the transformer (quite common).   Your transformer is always vibrating, and as it ages sometimes something shakes just a little loose and just enough to also vibrate ... like a bell ringing, and the pitch of the vibration changes as power is increased or decreased through the transformer.  You might hear it "whisp" through a frequency range as you turn it off

So, it is not necessarily something about to go bad, but that high-pitched sound can be VERY annoying.

Edit:  very old televisions are notorious for this, but newer models have better quality transformers that hold together better.

if its crt its the horizontal shift oscillator.

I'm going to have to turn in my two EE degrees ... what in the blazes is a monitor's "horizontal shift oscillator" ?????

its an internal component, i'm not entirely sure what it does, but i have that problem with my crt tv and i asked my electronics teacher, he's got 50yrs of electronics experience, and thats what he said

I think you are not relaying information correctly.  I'm guessing your teacher said "Horizontal Sweep", and that is generated by the flyback transformer.

You have 2 EE degrees and you don't know, or can't guess, that??!?!?

I only have the 1 EE based degree (CSE), but I can guess that would be the circuit to generate the clock pulse (that's what oscillators always do) for control of the period of the electron beams horizontal shift (or the horizontal scan rate, usually around the 100KHz range). C'mon, that's pretty obvious.
