Lulz.  Aging fast?  Until last year I had the first colour Sony Ericsson model ever made, and that was second hand.

That's nothing compared to mine.

*try not to get an aluminium case, they bend/warp easily.

N95 or wait for the N96.

I use the sony ericcson P1i, it is pretty cool, with tonnes of software available.  And the golf game is pretty good for wasting time at airports.

Okay, I'll try and do a quick list by company off the top of my head for you!

Sony Ericsson
P1i
P990i
For the Future
X1
G700
G900

Samsung
i300
i600
i320
i620
For the Future
G900 ('iffy' whether this is a smart phone)

Nokia
N95
N81
E90 - amazing, but still plagued with issues
For the Future
N96
N82
N78?

LG
Viewty (damn, this is such a wonderful phone)
For the Future
F' knows! It's LG - anything could happen!

Motorola
Q (I suppose - but I wouldn't get any kind of Motorola with their phone business looking to be dead or sold on pretty soon)
For the Future
A Motorola barbecue.

HTC
Anything by HTC, see:-
Touch Cruise
Touch Dual
Touch
P6500
TyTNII
S730
S710
S620
For the Future
HTC have a lot going on, and will be the ODM for the upcoming Sony Ericsson X1. They have a lot of experience, but beware their recent video driver issues. However, they are the smart-phone specialists (along with RIM and their line of BlackBerrys) and have some good vibes going on with WM6/6.1.

BlackBerry
Save the best 'til last. If you want a thick-ass BB, take a long, hard look at the S-HTCs and the Samsungs. Otherwise:-
Pearl (8100)
Pearl 8110
Pearl 8120
(the Curve and 8800 series are fat! [wide])
For the Future
Who knows? BB have had some issues with their American services, much tarnishing their reputation like HTC's was with their driver issues. They're a solid player, but their own brand OS won't necessarily have the compatibility that WM6/6.1 could aford you.

Conclusion
Go around a lot of phone shops and ask to try them out - but don't listen to what they tell you because they're out to make the profit and don't necessarily put you (the customer) first!
I'd avoid Phones4u and possibly Carphone Warehouse.
02 and the Orange shops are nice.
If you're around Birmingham way, I'd be happy to help you in person.
PM me if you need any more help/information.

All the best,
Andy

P.S. The iPhone is not a smartphone. Hell, even the LG Viewty mightn't really class as that but... I'm being nice to them as it's just so fantastic!

EDIT: HTC additions.
EDIT2: I was so stupid as to forget Nokia.

First person to mention the Iphone as a "smartphone" needs to gtfo of the internetz...

I'd take a Nokia N82, HTC Touch Cruise or a Sony X1

If money is no issue that is!

N82 has a better camera and flash
(and no ridiculous slide keyboard)

The iPhone is like sub-smart phone with the exception of those applications, which should come out soon

its a step up from a regular phone but a step down from what he specifically asked for...

I figured I should throw it in there

EDIT: I just actually wiki'd the iPhone and it linked me to the Smartphone page, which it is listed under....

The Iphone is a normal phone with a fancy touchscreen, nothing more...

Something that is bricked when it shippes cannot be a smartphone... not even close...

Agreed. Pray tell, what does the iPhone have over most other phones that you can get free on contract or even sub £80 on Pay-As-You-Go apart from Wi-Fi? Oh, and a touchscreen - but that doesn't come into smart-phone (it probably makes it less smart, if anything), especially when the LG Viewty does it so much better.

LG Viewty is kickass to Its a Cameraphone, it has it a 5 Megapixel Camera, AutoFocus, ImageStabilizer, Divx player, MP3 player, Internet Access, Email and off course you can page and call with it And many more features, it can do less than the N95 mentioned above, but then again it is 200 euros cheaper.

My shit didnt brick when it shipped, its functioning fine...

I can sync calendars, contacts, pull pictures off of my phone via USB, surf the web in full html, view Microsoft Office documents, download FULL songs via iTunes and WiFi from my phone, watch videos, listen to 8GB worth of music, go on maps.google.com via extension on my phone and get directions to anywhere, find my location VIA my phone and the google map extension, view text messages in conversation format...

Those are things that I actually use.

Those are also all things that my old "Regular Phone" could NOT do.

If I have all those things, and my old phone couldnt do that shit... then how are they the same?

and wouldnt MAC OS X make the phone a bit above "regular phones"?

EDIT: I have no problems with the touch screen, and I would prefer fingers to a stylus...

I'd take a BlackBerry 8800 then - if you can afford it, and have the need for it over a Pearl.

Or the HTC Touch Dual.

Or it depends how long you're willing to wait.

Please, see my above post and don't hesitate to PM me with more questions.

Also, where in the UK do you live?

A phone that you cannot even install a third party app on, is NOT a smartphone,, it is bricked (forgive me bending the word brick here, but that's how i see it) to the standard config (like a normal phone)...

Normal phones can do all that too, only not sync with iTunes (for obvious reasons)

Just because YOUR old phone couldn't it doesn't mean that all can't...

Here you fall into the classic mac-trap... Apple tells you that the software in your phone is OS-X even though it has NOTHING in common with the real OS-X

GodFather wrote:

I never said anything bad/good about the touch screen ?

I only have experience with with two 'real' smartphones: Blackberry 8800 and T-Mobile SDA. Both are good but I would of course recommend the former. My only gripe is that the scroll wheel in the middle feels a bit cheap and when your hands are cold you *really* don't want to have to scroll.

Anyone got any suggestions for the below :

-3.2<camera/video recording
-mp3 player not essential but would be nice
-looks good
-different
-price ... <£400

Unless i'm being stupid the 8800 has no camera?
