I currently have 7800GTX made from XFX.

I was looking around for new videocard, and oh my god, these 8600 gt cards are super cheap.

Looking at some benchmark it seems that it can be an upgrade.

How much of an upgrade do you guys think this will be????

Wouldn't bother if I was you. Spend a bit more and get a 8800gts G92

Depends on what 8600 you go with, but generally,  the 8600 in a DX10 version of the 7600GT, so its not really that big performence gain.

What benchmarks are you looking at?  The 7800GTX is much better than the 8600GT.  Don't waste your money.

Thanks guys, for your fast responses.

I guess I'll save up for 8800 GTS G92

I don't know why people keep suggesting the GTS G92 over the 8800GT when the performance is basically the same. I have had both, and I'm using the GTS now because of the slight gains with my 24" monitor.

StormEye, get the 8800gt. If you are running at higher resolutions(1920x1200) then the GTS is worth it. Though I doubt you are since you're looking at budget cards.

I am using 1280*1024 resolution most of the time.

Main game that I usually play is CoD4

Then get the 8800gt.

If you are looking for something cheaper though, then the 8800gs is out now. The 8800gt has a 27% performance gain over the GS, but the GS costs $100 less than 8800gt.

XFX 8800gs $169.99 at newegg

Can anyone give me just a rough estimate of how much of a performance gain I might be expecting when I get 8800gs?

Just a rough estimate

There's not a whole lot of info out on this card.

Do you want to be able to play crysis on high settings?

Not exactly sure if I am even going to play Crysis any time soon.

But I will settle for medium settings if I do play.

If you can afford the 8800gt get that. It is an awesome card that will allow you to play Crysis on high with decent frames, as long as the rest of your system is up to it.

If you can't afford the GT, then the GS is a good option.

Buy the 8800GT and if you buy a new system in the future you can reuse the card. Itll work on your current system, start saving for a new intel system though.

What is all this talk about the 8800gt when he asked about the 8600GT?

Currently not much ado about the DX10 cards, so stick with the 7800GTX.

Well obviously he has changed his mind due to the responses he got, so you might wanna re-read the thread properly.

I have an Nividia 8600 GT 512mb and I love it. Playing all my current games (COD4, CSS, Command and Conquer TS) at high everything with 1280x1024 res (my monitors highest) It's an extremely good card for the price!

It seems that I will not be able to get PCI Express x16 2.0 so I think my choice is limited to 8600 GT or 8800 GTS

Unless I am wrong...

I'm not sure that it matters, I believe that PCI X16 2.0 will still work on PCI-E 1.0 mobos (unless someone knows better)...

PCI-E 2.0 card WORK fine on PCI-E 1.0 motherboards!

And stick to the 7800GTX unless you can afford the G92 8800GT 512MB...

Wrong. The GT is not as good as the GTX. But the GTS ( G92 ) outperforms it by a few FPS. And that is not overclocked. The GT only comes close to the GTX when its oc'ed. The GTS overclocked is much better.
