I don't drive.

Also, inb4LOLAUTOMATICSAREFORPUSSIES... no, they're for people who commute in traffic that's got more than 10 cars.

How much does it cost, in total to get a driving license over there, lessons and the exam?

if you learn, you just know.

like my dad said when he was teaching me: driving stick is like fucking an 80 year old woman. its OK as long as you don't look down.

after about 10 hours it becomes pretty much second nature, shifting and knowing. just know your gear limits and then check rpms against miles per hour and, oh, i'm in fourth! ok. besides, unless you're in a parking lot or going 50+ mph, you're probably in fourth anyways.

i think everybody should know how. its great for confidence on the road, and confidence builds better drivers. not to mention it gives you an extra break (your engine).

edit: @ hurri: thats a great point, but i do stop and go every morning and every evening. its really not that bad. a little more work, yeah. but its worth it.

@PBA: i think its usually around 2-300 USD.

A learner's permit test is pretty cheap, same with the license test. At least in Maryland. I don't know about lessons.

Also, in DC and Maryland at least, new drivers are required to go to driver's ed.

Ender: Good point as well... I mean I wouldn't MIND being good with manual but I see it as unnecessary ... that said, if I had a manual with paddle shifters that'd be a whole nother story.

rediculous. really it is.

@ hurri: paddleshifters are semis. and thats cheating. honestly though, they never really appealed to me. maybe because i grew up watching my dad drive stick, but hey.

i do agree that its not 100 percent necessary, but its a great way to better learn to control the car, seeing as you have to one hand a lot of stuff. it helps keeps nerves down, and thats always important.

have you ever driven stick? if you haven't, i guarantee you'd be hooked when you try it. its just such an awesome way to drive a car. my brother just got his permit, and was completely uninterested in stick. in fact, he had the same view as you. i made him drive the last 300 meters home once (private road, don't worry) and he was hooked.

...I'll consider it And yeah Sydney that's incredibly expensive.

Ender IDK if it's been a while, but do you know if the learner's permit test is hard? It's just questions on the rules of the road (they ask about shit like commercial vehicles and motorcycles for some reason... even though I want one for a Class C car)

Not entirely.  You have to have some sort of Driver's Education (Either from Classes in a school - about 30 hours total, or online) which then lets you take a test to get your Permit, which let's you drive as long as you have a licensed Adult over the age of 25 in the front seat.  However, you must first take 6 hours of behind the wheel training with a certified instructor.  Your permit is good for 6 Months, during which you must acquire 50 hours of behind the wheel time, with 10 being at night.  Once you have done this, you go to the DMV, where you take a 20 minute cruise with an Official, who grades you.   If you don't make too many mistakes, you pass and get your license.  However, for the first 12 months (if you're under 18) you can't drive between 2300 - 0500, and you can't drive with anyone under the age of 25 in your car.  But you can drive Solo.

Grand Total? You can get away with it for about $150-$175 if you take your Driver's Ed online.  If you go to a school, it can move it up to about $300 Total.

I understand the concept, I've just never been able to actually try since I took driver's training w/ an automatic and my parents owned all automatics.

You can also take a home taught course, and if you wait 6 months after you get your permit with the home taught course your parents can opt to waive the driving test.

Out in the midwest, I wouldn't be worried about hitting anything but corn

Anyway, yea, I can drive stick, and drive it well. I wish the car I owned was manual, but, alas damn cheaper used cars......

Anyway, Stingray, driving a stick doesn't take that much concentration once you learn how to drive one, the only time is when you go to shift and miss a gear, but it's usually not a problem, just try putting it in gear again, and not be ZOMG WTF DO I DO?

Driving is more fun.

I get to feel superior to those who don't know how.

Learned how manual transmission works on my motorcycle as a teenager, then parents demanded my first car be a manual transmission as well. I've owned a manual transmission vehicle most of my adult life.

I've had a couple hours of practice in my mom's Ford Ranger.  Not quite proficient yet and wouldn't drive in traffic, but i'm getting there.  My main problem is that i wasn't giving it enough gas and stalling it out.  My car is an automatic, but I really want my next car to be manual.
