Here's the kinda long-ish story:

Last time I tried to play BF2, I decided I'd just play a quick single player round.  I know the game version is up to date and that BF2 is working properly.  Game loads, select 16 single-player Gulf of Oman, loading screen, then I'm in game.  Spawn as USMC, quickly move two more AI's into my squad, then hop in a hummer and drive to the closest flag.  I order everyone out to capture the flag more quickly, and then I get out of the hummer.  This is like only a few minutes into gameplay.  Then it goes downhill in a matter of seconds.  The ground disappears, you can see everything.  The skin for the weapons disappear, everyone's holding gray guns now.  Then the guns disappear.  Then BF2 crashes, QUICKLY. Then the Blue screen of death flashes for like 1-2 seconds, then my computer is off.  No shut-down period, just instantly off.  I put my hand underneath - it's sweltering - I imagine my laptop overheated, which caused various parts to fail (first, notably the GPU).  So I'm worried, dig around in my crap, and find the little pamphlet that is like discovering gold. It's my Office Depot 3-year warranty.

My laptop is a Sony Vaio FS660P/W (Click here for every stat...or click here for stats too) by the way.

After some calls and shipping, my laptop is in Florida for repairs.  I get a call from the repair company informing me that they couldn't find anything wrong with my laptop - it passed the air-flow test (meaning it was properly ventilating), and all the components, according to them, are in working order.  The only thing they did was reset the OS (which is Microsoft XP Pro).  I'm hoping that reset will help, but I think I might need to be proactive in preventing my computer from overheating.

So, I'm looking to purchase a cooling pad to help keep my laptop from going Chernobyl again, as I so affectionately refer to the incident I described above.  I'm totally open to your suggestions, but here are my requirements:
===If it's a really good cooling pad, I'm willing to pay around US $50, so that's about my spending limit.
===It'd be nice if the cooling pad could fit in a backpack sleeve, but it's not mandatory.
===The pad CANNOT have a lip on the front - I have jacks/switch I need to have access to on the front of the laptop, so the lip would only get in the way.
===My laptop blows the heat out the back right corner, but it gets warm all along the back edge, so that's probably where the majority of the cooling needs to be directed, aka a cooling pad without any ventilation on the back edge won't cut it.
===It needs to fit my laptop, which is a 15.4" Widescreen model, dimensions 14.33(width front/back) x 1-1.41(height) x 10.41(sides) inches

By the way, I'm cool with newegg.com and amazon.com, especially amazon --> through a friend I have Amazon Prime = 2 day shipping for free!

Here's some I've just picked out that seem to have good reviews, but I'm unsure as to which I should buy. Again, I'm totally open to your comments, even saying that the ones below suck, but PLEASE, make a recommendation to a better unit then!  Thanks so much!

First off, how old is the laptop? You might have accumulated dust in the vents and fans, so if you haven't done so, get a can of compressed air and blow out your vents.

I believe the Zalman notebook coolers NC1000/2000 (I think) have relatively decent reviews. Can't be of any more help beyond that, I'm sorry. You might want to head over to notebookreview.com and ask them there - they'll probably give some better advice.

It's ~2.5 years old, and no, I'm not buying a new one.  I need to save my $ right now (college isn't helping; already am really tight, going to be even tighter with my money really soon)

Yes, there's no dust - I cleaned it out, and I imagine the repair shop did too, via can of compressed air.

Thanks for the pointer to notebookreview.com - I'll see what they say.

Take it apart and clean it. Then stick ice cubes in it so it cools down. =P

Did that first part.

I'll do the second part if you pay me $2000 for the ice cubes (not like that's the price of a new laptop or anything )

If I was rich like bill gates I'd give you the money to get the best laptop there is =P too bad I'm not.

I don't really know what to say since I've never owned a laptop.

Well, at least you're honest!

Now, come on, I'm sure there's at least more than 1 person besides Smithereener on here that has an educated opinion...

Well, don't all shout at once.

I think I'm going to go with the 3rd one I posted, or at least a similar, but larger model. I'm just trying to figure out if my laptop will fit on it :S

1st Edit:
My laptop dimensions:
Width (front/back): 14.3 to 14.33 inches = 363 to 364 mm
Length (sides): 10.4 to 10.41 inces = 264 to 264.5 mm

Zalman ZM-NC1000:
308(L) x 330(W) x 40(H) mm

Zalman ZM-NC2000:
318(L) x 400(W) x 42.5(H) mm

hmmmmm, what I don't get is how some reviews on random sites say that a 15.4" laptop will fit on the smaller 1000 unit.  Maybe their laptop isn't widescreen/as wide as mine?  One review said he had ~1/2 inch of overhang on each side with his 15.4" laptop.

Screw overhang.  I'll just get the Zalman 2000.  I won't buy it just yet in case someone wants to speak up with a better model.

2nd Edit:
Anyone reading this, please let me know if you find a good price for the Zalman 2000, available for purchase online. --> Karma is available!

What the hell?!  On newegg (link clicky) like 6 ppl said there was a little overhang, but their 15.4" widescreen fit.   Hmmmm, still, that overhang, is it worth it?

Clean itn out with compressed air, open the hatches to the HDD, RAM and CPU (Usually on the bottom), blow the parts clean and put the hatches back. Then just place an old 80mm fan sucking at the air outlet/blowing into the inlet, and it'll run a lot cooler. You can hook up a computer fan to run from USB power.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

a.) Don't have "an old 80mm fan" just laying around
b.) Though I'm quick to learn things, I will admit I have no electronic skills, which includes sautering wires and such.

But it is an option, albeit I've already mentioned that my laptop ISN'T DUSTY, and I'm kinda wanting to purchase a cooling pad rather than manufacture one myself.

My mate had a similar problem with his stupidly hot laptop, so what we did was get a cooling tray like you'd have for cake or something and sat it on that. Make sure you get one that is raised as much as possible, and it should provide you with enough room for the air to escape properly. You may as well try it, it's a lot cheaper than some crazy cooling device.

Something like this

Nah, I think I'll stick with something with fans - I need to be proactive in my cooling, and a passive cooling method alone isn't an option: I need fans.

Well, here's my dimensions of my laptop foot pads:

Width (front/back length) 12.89 inches = 327.4 mm
Length (sides length) 9 inches = 228.6 mm

To recap:
Zalman ZM-NC1000:
308(L) x 330(W) x 40(H) mm

Zalman ZM-NC2000:
318(L) x 400(W) x 42.5(H) mm

Hmm, guess it would technically fit on the Zalman 1000, but it would overhang....
....but, seeing as how pretty much everyone is out of stock or doesn't list the Zalman 2000, I might just go with the 1000 due to availability and my current need.

Ive had the same problem with my laptop. Its a 2 year old 17in HP Pavillion zd8000 with a fucking P4 Prescot cpu at 3.2ghz. Ive been through with the notebook coolers though i never found one that fits, so i gave up on that. But heres what i did i sent to bestbuy for them to clean which took 2 months to clean it cause they broke it. So after that i took 2 2 by 4 lego bricks and stuck them together. I built more and out them under each rubber foot. bought a small desk fan and left it blowing beside my laptop on low. It solved my problems

Well, I've officially purchased the Zalman ZM-NC1000, and it should be here on Wednesday.  Here's hoping it fits just right!

Well, I got my Zalman ZM-NC1000 in the mail yesterday, and the feet of my laptop perfectly fit width wise - there's no room to spare, but that's okay - it fits!  And it made a great difference in the temp of my laptop - it barely got anywhere near "warm" at all!

btw guess that means that this thread is officially over, so any Mod, feel free to close it if you'd like, or leave it open, whatever.  Don't care
