Toshiba Throws in the Towel
It looks like the high definition format war may be coming to a close. Sources are saying that Toshiba is set to give up on the HDDVD format.

The move will likely put an end to a battle that has gone on for several years between consortiums led by Toshiba and Sony vying to set the standard for the next-generation DVD and compatible video equipment.

Game Over.

Do it quick. They wont be manufacturing them anymore. You'd better enjoy the movies you get.

microsoft shouldn't have taken the cheap route with the 360.  not that it's their fault, but it didn't help.

not until US&A has good internet

While the high speed internet these days is decent enough for, say, iTunes HD rentals... it's no good for enthusiasts. Let's see you steadily stream a 1080p24 video with uncompresesed 7.1 TrueHD or DTS-MA on the high speed we have in the US...

Common sense would have said HD would have won, its the VHS  to Blu-rays Betamax.  I had pinned my hopes on HD early on, but it quickly became obvious that Blu-ray had alot more support, and as it gre wit chipped away at HD.  Ill be happy to stick with regular old DVDs till they stop making them, never saw the big deal with all this high-definition crap, my giant 57 inch 1080p looks no better then my 20inch CRT, so meh.

Buy a HD DVD player and keep it in-the-box mint condition and it *might* be worth a fortune someday

True. They were also the reason DvD prices remained low. I wonder if they strongarm bluray prices the same way.

I was really supporting HD-DVD but I will admit that I am happy something has been chosen.  I just hope Sony does not get a big head over this.

Lemme get this straight.
Blu-Ray is 1080p, correct?
Why not buy an upconverter and play your standard DVD's in 1080p quality?

1) That's not "true" 1080p

2) There are different qualities... you use Photoshop, Ryan. Take a JPEG image at 1920x1080 for dimensions. Save one as a JPEG at image quality 1, and the other at image quality 12. You'll see the difference, even though they're the same dimension. All 1080p stands for is "1920x1080, progressive scan"

3) Blu-rays also have shitloads more space than a DVD, meaning they support much higher quality audio. Like on Black Hawk Down's Blu-ray you can use 7.1 uncompressed audio

They do bang-up job don't get me wrong, but upscaling, say, Pirates of the Caribbean won't look as good as the actual Pirates blu-ray (especially if you've got a 1080p24 TV) not to mention the audio

The exclusive backing of Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) was also put in doubt when the software giant said in January that it could consider supporting Blu-ray technology for its Xbox 360 video game machine, which currently works only with HD DVD.
