Sold one of my older rigs some month ago to a friend.

Specs:
AMD64 4000+
2048MB RAM DDR2 800 Mhz (Corsair TwinMX me thinks)
Asus A8N-E-SLI Socket 939
MSI Nvidia Gefore 7900GTX 512MB
this and that

As my friend is mostly playing WOW, BF2, BF2142 and COD4 the setup was pretty ok so far to run everything in good settings etc.

He bought Crysis last week and also installed Vista (I dont know why!!!) and now he wants to get some DX10 gfx etc.

What do u think?

I told him to consider a Geforce 8800GTS 512MB OCéd maybe, but I´m not sure if the CPU etc. will bottleneck it too much.

CPU replacement is a must and he should also get the card you suggested. Is the PSU up for the task?
Wait, the mobo is 939 and memory is DDR2?

I'd do an upgrade to the Intel Core platform!

PSU is fine, when I build that thingy I´ve put in a Enermax Infinity 750W PCI-E (as I´ve run two GTX with it).

Mobo is Socket 939, RAM is DDR2 6400 800 Mhz Corsair TwinMX CL 2.5

@Kylef:
upgrade to Intel? Ok, but isnt that going to get too exensive? A good GPU is only somewhat 300€. Mobo, CPU, GPU, RAM is going to scratch 600€

Slayer are you sure about this? I thought socket 939 only supports DDR memory and not DDR2. Can you at least give me a link to the mobo?

Tell him to wait a year and then upgrade fully.

He will need to upgrade the memory as well so maybe switching to Intel is the best choice. He needs to change memory, processor (4200+ is the fastest on 939 socket which is not enough to run Crysis well), motherboard. He should pick the platform.

Fastest on 939 are the FX-** CPU's or Opty's but for the money of the best Opty, you can buy a Q6600 and the fastest Opty on 939 cant come near an E6400.

buh

Well, then we´ll go for a complete new system.

The Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 is the only CPU out of the new series aviable atm. Is that CPU a good choice? Seen that the 8400 and 8500 arent much more expensive (but out of stock in Germany)...

And when are the new Nvidia GPU´s released? Any ideas?

The E8200 is definetely a good buy, as I'm sure it can be easily overclocked to E8400 speeds if you wish.

well I´m not a too big fan of all that overclocking stuff, but I´ve heard it´s pretty safe/easy with the new CPU´s, chipsets and motherboards.

What specs do u suggest with a budget limit of around 1.200€?

That's about £900, hmm..do you need a new monitor/keyboard/mouse etc? Or just the main unit?

only main unit I´d say (he got a 24" LCD, G15 and MX518 already)

*E8400 is just a bit more expensive than E8200 (20€)=190€
*Corsair Dominator 8500 2GB                                  =65€
*Gigabyte DS5-X38                                                 =155€
*8800GTS 512                                                        =300€
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total                                                                      =710€

maybe a good case additional, as the old case (miditower) had some issues when I placed my 8800GTX in it at times....

I'm aware it is a little over the budget but prices will be a bit lower from where you are buying it I suspect. Not sure if you needed an optical drive / hard drive etc but I threw them in anyway. If not, take out £100 and upgrade something else!

Holy shit, 750w only for that 0.o, a 600 or even 550w will do.

PSU cant have enough power imo, and as the price diffrence isnt too large (Thermaltake Thoughpower 750W is only 99€ over here) why pick a weaker PSU...

What about that suggested Gigabyte mobo, which chipset is it. My friend just told me he´s thinking about SLI

If you get a Intel chipset, buy a high end ATI card like the 3870X2......and then buy a 3850/3870. Yes it's called Hybrid-Crossfire allowing you to use 3870X2 with 3850/3870. So you buy 1 400,00 Gfx card and next month, you buy a 3850 and you still have Crossfire .
