only reason I've bought blu-ray movies is becuase my PS3 played them out of the box and I have a TV that makes it worthwhile. no one could say that with their 360. huge marketing mistake.

True, movies in their best HD quality are ridiculously big in file size. A 1080p blu-ray rip of 300 is 26GB. On my connection, that would take about 2 hours and 10 minutes to download if I get my max download speed a la rapidshare.

ON THE OTHER HAND, it's easy to bring the filesize down without sacrificing that much. 300 in 720p still looks and sounds amazing, yet it fits on a DVD (!)

Because that is in 1080i, which is not full HD (1080p). It was only a matter of time before HD-DVD bit the dust. I was trying to hold out til Microsoft finally broke down and went with Blu-Ray in their 360 Elites. There has been rumblings that they are headed that way. Now that Toshiba has all but abandoned their own baby, it is only a matter of time til Microsoft decides to back the Sony made product.

Good, I was going to buy that new Samsung player that does both, but I was getting quotes of £600 easy. I'll just stick to my PS3 for now, but, the sound, just doesnt cut it with my current set up (optical lead to the amp).

Or you could have just read when the adult industry decided to go with Blu-Ray about 3 to 5 weeks ago. Thats who decided VHS Beta max. That industry has such huge sales that well, its not even funny, and once that announcement came everyone fell like dominos. The Xbox 360 is actually a really smart design when it was designed without an internal HD-DVD player and instead could have either format USBed in. The PS3 on the otherhand would have been doomed if the adult industry had decided HD-DVD.

Since HD DVD promo group has never considered Sony PlayStation 3 as a Blu-ray disc player

And why not? Their contention is that PS3's aren't really used for Blu-Ray movies. All you need to do is look at Blu-Ray disc sales to see this is not true. With major retailers recently announcing that they will sell Blu-Ray exclusively you can bet the numbers will be even more skewed to BD.

Microsoft’s PR team sent out this statement regarding the recent developments in the HD DVD camp and rumors that there will be a Xbox 360 Blu-ray add-on drive in the near future:

“We do not believe the recent reports about HD DVD will have any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace. As we’ve long stated, we believe it is games that sell consoles and Xbox 360 continues to have the largest next-gen games library with the most exclusives and best selling games in the industry. We will wait until we hear from Toshiba before announcing any specific plans around the Xbox 360 HD DVD player. Despite Red's inability to make any real public statement, Japanese publication Nikkei has it that Toshiba president Atsutoshi Nishida will be announcing the final discontinuation of HD DVD tomorrow (Today), as well as halted sales of hardware and media by March (as in days from now). Apparently Toshiba will pull its units from retail shelves, but has no intention to give burned early adopters any refunds (no kidding?); it sounds like the ceasefire will include the bare PC drives as well, so those hoping to keep using HD DVD as a personal data storage medium probably won't have much luck. Apparently the announcement will come alongside Toshiba's plans to build new semiconductor fabs, which we're sure they'll try to spin as an advancement that far overshadows the hill of beans (read: hundreds of millions) they've lost in the format war.

Just in case we still had some skeptics.

Following several days of rumors, Toshiba has confirmed that it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders, effectively ending the high-def format war.

In a just-issued press release, the company said that it reached the decision following "recent major changes in the market." Toshiba emphasized that it will continue to provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products.

"We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop,” said Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation. "While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality.”

Toshiba said it will begin reducing shipments of HD DVD players and recorders immediately, with the aim of pulling all HD DVD players, recorders and disc drives from store shelves by March. The company went on to say that it would "continue to assess" the long-term viability of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives.
