HDD Lock?

My friend asked me this, and I couldnt really answer him...

Have you ever heard of someone putting a security code on a hard drive, where after you format it, it is still there and prevents you from installing any operating system or adding any files?

I know it is just so that the customer is forced to return to him so he can charge them out the ass.

I told him I thought you should just be able to destroy the data, like wipe the shit out of it and he responded...

Did complete formats 4 times, it is format proof. The hard drive is useless unless you take it back to him to unlock the security.

So im wondering if anyone has heard of this? Or a solution to destroy the password?

Bigass magnet? Not trying to be a prick, but wouldn't that do a pretty good job of wiping all the data, whether it wanted to be wiped or not?

Thats what I was thinking, LOL...

but size of magnet and wouldnt that kind of damage the HDD? as far as the firmware or w.e?

He's messing with you... You can encrypt the data or have a bios password... but you could format the drive and install your own OS... and you can get a 200gb drive for 60 bucks

Pointsec could be a software that encripts all the data in a HDD, where you need the code of it to reformat it. How I know? thats what the IT guys use were I work

Delete all partitions and do a low-level format. Unless the program is built into the firmware, I can't see how it would prevent you from formatting.

By low level format, we don't mean just right click an icon and hit format, but Google should tell you how.
