Read Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser to gain more insight into massive livestock operations and the push for profit at the unfortunate cost to the workers, consumers, and animals themselves.  At least I am confident that I have not eaten any of the contaminated meat, as I do not buy Hallmark/Westland meat.

I figure as long as there's shit like that going on, no matter how isolated and how far between the incidents are, there's no way in hell I'll give cattle farmers/slaughters a cent of my money, because honestly, I don't care how low something is on the food chain.  An organism is an organism and should be treated as such.  The point at which we start treating living beings: cows, pigs, chickens, dolphins (etc...) as "things" or as "food" and disregard the fact that they are alive simply because we don't consider them "sapient" and they lack the higher cognitive thinking that we've evolved is truly saddening to say the least.
Don't forget celery, cabbage, carrots, apples, etc.  Plants are living things too.  The idea is respect.  Respect the food you eat and the ability for us as humans to enjoy the fruit of the earth.  Sure, I would love to have farm-raised animals and plants to cultivate and eat, but that just isn't realistic right now.  So I try to minimize my support of inhumane and disrespectful companies and processes - but that is just me.  I don't do it to feel superior to other people who don't think like me, I do it for my (and the animal's) health and well-being.

People that bitch and complain should raise their own livestock and butcher them themselves. I was required to butcher a number of animals when I was younger, and can imagine how desensitized and uncaring an individual could become when required to slaughter countless animals day to day.

I don't condone these actions, but I think people are getting too flustered over something they have never had to deal with themselves.

All I care about is what they feed the animals, the rest is unimportant to me.

If I had the time/money, I would raise my own livestock.. but I don't, so I don't eat meat.  Honestly, I don't think that you can get too flustered over the abuse and deplorable conditions that animals are raised in so that you can eat these days.  And if you're 'desensitized' enough to not feel for the animals, than you should at least feel for your gut..

Yeah, you can't win 'em all... but I don't hear an apple scream in pain when I pull it off of a tree.  And fruit is the plant's natural way of spreading it's seeds

This is exactly why I only eat organic stuff. The cows and chickens are atleast allowed to roam free.

It is just degrees of separation.  It seems that your argument of "an organism is an organism and should be treated as such" should be extended to plant life as well.  I am not saying you need to coddle a growing carrot, but there is a certain level of respect that should be afforded to plant life as well.  People should understand and be grateful for the amount of food that we can and are able to eat, and the processes involved from planting to plating.

"Do you know what they do to those chickens?"
"No, but it's delicious."
