i think im going to start a class for BJJ.
i need to keep in shape better. dont get me wrong, my upper body is in great shape, but talking with Jord made me realize how much i need to get back into cardio. on top of that i NEED to stop smoking.....like, my girl is making me stop, so i think that will help me.
on top of that, i need some sort of competition in my life, besides video games. i work by myself, im not involved in any team sports, so i literally dont have anyone to compete with.

i took a few different martial arts when i was a kid, and excelled in all of them.
however, none of them focused on grappling nearly as much as BJJ.
so i thought i would see if any of you have had any experience with it.

no, i dont care what martial art is better.....i dont want to hurt people, i want competiton, and when it comes down too it, its like a chess game on a mat.
if i wanted to hurt people i would stab/shoot them, so dont tell me how impractical it is, or how Jeet Kun Do is better...i just want to see if anyone else has ever gotten into it.

Good luck dude! I've always wanted to do some kind of wild martial art. But i always think im too old to start. im 16. i wouldnt really like the fact that theres 10 year olds who are years ahead of me, but i guess theres lots of people who didnt start that early.

But for right now im gunna just go to the gym every day.

Have fun!

i practiced taekwondo for years when i was growing up.  it will most definitely keep you in shape.  and the tourneys were the best part.  you get matched up against fighters of equal skill, so it's not like you'll get a beatdown (at least until you reach the higher levels)  i know taekwondo isnt nearly the same as jujitsu, but i'm sure the mental focus and physical aspects are very similar.  its a rewarding endeavor, and may even help you out in real life... btw, i smoked for 10 years before i quit.  i used the patch, but you reeeeally have to be committed.  if you really want to quit,  it can be done!  good luck

I boxed when I got out of High school. It was far more cardio than I ever had playing soccer.

I respect MMA also. I never got into that, it wasn't very popular when I had the time to try it. I do watch Friday night fights every week though . Maybe I'll see Kerrazy ass Parker on there one night. If you don't mind me asking how much do you weigh?

Hey

BJJ is great man I don't specifically do BJJ I do MMA which is an awesome workout we do Striking Mondays and Grappling Tuesdays which consists mostly of jui jitsu but it is an awesome workout for cardio and just to simply get into shape even if you don't want to compete in the MMA sport its a great workout and awesome for cardio plus your doing the jui jitsu and your right it is like a chess match and its a blast people can claim what they want about the martial arts but if you ever Watch MMA the ground game is usually the Key

anyway man

Good luck

Well, a few things to ask first...

1) Are you just picking a martial art to get in shape, or to master a discipline?

2) If you are interested in mastering a fighting discipline, what style do you want and do you believe there are any qualified experts in those arts near you where you can train?

I'm asking because there's a gazillion other ways to get in shape, and you don't have to get banged up, hyper extended, cauliflower ear'd, and waste gobs of money.  Just get a full size bag and box.  Boxing is more than adequate to get you in shape..moreso cardiovascularly.  Maybe do a variety of things to get in shape...swim and box...done...you'll have massive shoulders and not an ounce of body fat...and it's cheap as hell.

If you want to be an expert in a fighting discipline, pick one you really like, not what's trendy.  yes, a grappling/submission sport is fun and practical..but do you really ever get in fights, and do they always go to the ground?  Reason why I'm asking is because I used to be all uppity about being int he best martial art..taking muy tai in San Francisco from real thai kick boxers, I was introduced to Jiu Jitsu Brasileiro when I was in Brasil and found a bunch of poser businesses in the Bay Area here pretending to teach 'the real deal.'  I even started some Kung Fu because I was sold on the resume of the sifus there.  I ended up going back to what I knew best..boxing.  I used to have decent coordination and could pound a speed bag for a good 10 minutes before tiring....

Anyway, good luck finding something.  And if you want reflexes like a cat and ummatched balance and speed...nothing will do better for you than fencing!  Even Bruce Lee credited fencing as the basis for all martial arts and loosely based his jeet koon do on it.

i weigh in at a whopping 135 lbs @ 5'7.
my history with martial arts includes karate, tae kwon do, ninjitsu and jeet kune do.
i NEVER get into fights, nor do i plan too. in fact being a CCW holder, i avoid situations like that. so me wanting to learn this, isnt for practical use, its just something i have always been interested in. i have always been a better grappler than a striker. i have a short reach, and i dont generate as much power as the bigger guys. about the only thing i have going for me on my feet is speed.
as for the ground, before i even knew what any of this shit was, i wrestled with my friends, and mostly won with my legs...when i was on my back. so i like to think im more likely to grapple, than i am standing and throwing blows. i have a bag and some gloves, and i work with my hands all day. i tested my hand strength on one of those gadgets from brookstone, and i can generate 200 lbs squeezing force with my right hand, so i can throw.....but like i said, im limited to my size.
i dont think i will ever get too serious with this.
i was on swim team when i was a kid, and got nasty ear infections every year.
end result:
i have had nine sets of tubes (if you know what those are), and two mastoidectomies. those are really fun...they cut your ear off from the back of your head....fold it over and then rebuild the ear drum.....twice on my right fucking ear. and i still cant hear out of it.
anyway, a few blows to either of my ears, and my career would come to a screeching, painful halt.

but fencing....i have never thought about that. i might have to look into that...thanks for the idea.

Well, given your build and more importantly you being a CCW carrier, you would do well to avoid any take downs...so yeah, fast footwork, good parrying and lunging, etc might be good given your curb weight.  If you're taken to the ground, your weight will impede you some, even to the untrained gangster who is going for your newly discovered gun in your waste band.

Of course no training will help you avoid that sucker punch or otherwise cheap shot unless there's a place to sharpen your hearing...which with your past doesn't seem likely.

Guys light on their feet will more likely excel in sports like fencing, kung fu (any chinese art), boxing, etc.  The ground fight (which 75% of all fights end up as apparently), is won by your size and strength..among other things.

Maybe "ninjitsu" is the answer!  just kidding...don't need anymore mall ninjas.

In terms of combat effectiveness it's one of the best imo (along with thai boxing) but if you're doing it for cardio solely there are better alternatives.

BJJ is definately a winner, one of the most spectacular to watch also - go for it Parker - changing style is always a little difficult at first but i guess you know that from earlier practice
